Biggest question mark for me would be how players get placed onto teams. It's a huge scouting advantage for a team to be able to have a prospect play for their G League affiliate.

I'm assuming they are going to have them go through the G-League draft, but the NBA has a history for allowing teams to pick up players in local markets as free agents (back in the day).

I absolutely LOVE this move by the NBA/G-League. If the NCAA refuses to evolve, disrupt the market yourself and reap the rewards.

watch the NCAA counter with threatening to remove eligibility of any high school kid who simply inquires about whether the league is interested in them.

They'll probably also get the Feds to spend buttloads of resources and dollars to wire-tap and arrest HS coaches for schools that receive federal dollars, like they did those college asst coaches. And while the Feds are investigating, similar to Melton, kids won't be able to play in their senior year State Championships.

The NCAA president actually said in the article that he supports this option.

I think one and done is a determintal concept for the NCAA in general. Having players stay longer helps fans establish a relationship with the player combined with the school.

These large institutions have a diverse and long history for NCAA Basketball, and having players stay longer can allow that missing piece in story telling and fan relationship in the long term that has been missing outside of just March Madness.

So, are they going to allow HS students to get agents, then -- talk to teams, try-out, etc? Or would your effort to pursue such an option immediately make you ineligible? If it's the latter, then he's just giving lip-service to the idea.

Also, if he is being absolutely honest, then are the Feds going to do the right thing to, and drop the BS charges on those asst coaches. Of course, it's too late for Melton to get his sophmore year back, and likely 1st Round Rookie Scale contract.

Would be a game changer for the NBA, G-League games would become must-watch TV if they got big-time prospects. The NBA could essentially gut college ball and make a ton of money with a new TV deal.

not sure about that. the g-league still wouldn't come close to what a college game type atmosphere is and the loyalty/rivalries that comes with it

Which begs the question: Why did the NCAA ever care if players enter a draft, or seek counseling of a professional agent. Maybe because they were/are afraid of losing those players and TV market share?

If the G-League steals all the top prospects... I think it could. People turn on ESPN to see Zion Williamson play, not a Duke uniform.

125k is real money, why would any kid not take that over a (relative to the situation) useless year of college?

while somewhat true, I think you're underestimating what following these colleges have. And that's regardless of who's playing. Duke nation didn't all of a sudden become a significant basketball school bc of Zion. They were all of that before him and will continue to be after him. there's just a passion and energy with college sports that's priceless and not easily replicated

And they said only a select few will be receiving these 125k offers so it may not be exactly enough to actually impact the g-league to the magnitude of all of the ncaa.

It said in the article the NBA itself will target certain players and made it seem like not everyone will be recruited. So I guess we will get some more details soon but it seems like there is a lot that needs to be decided as the process goes along.

I think you are both correct. Schools and rivalries matter but it’s also true that basketball is a star sport.

125k is a great idea to show the league is actually trying to get top talent but they will actually make more money off the court.

Yeah, money from the TV contracts and player merchandising. You even said their ticket sales would not suffer at all, since college rivalries will persist with or without the best players.

So, why were they ever against students entering draft and seeking counseling from professional agents?

How much will Duke/Nike/NCAA lose on a nationwide level, when this becomes an GLeague/Adidas Jersey, and Duke is left trying to peddle their Senior jerseys to non Duke fans.

anxious to see how many of these actual big contracts they'll actually be able to offer. There's tons of talented kids that can play all around the world. just a lot of questions as we hear more details about this

Yeah, that’s the big goal for the NBA. If they can increase revenue for the GLeague via a revolving door of star players, generating increased TV revenue and merchandising, they might be able to start paying Euro players to come over, and actually make the league more sustainably interesting and relevant in global FIBA terms.

That would be awesome. And that would tremendously help the NBA, too.

The only think people care about about is march madness. College basketball regular season ratings are terrible. No one really cares about the players or even the teams.
