Its a little better now than the last couple of years. At least oladipo, dsj, and mitchell are rising talents. They had dleague type journeyman do this contest for a while. We have lebron to blame for that trend. Stars stopped when lebron refused to do the dunk contest
I actually like it when it's "nobodies," The nobodies might never get a chance to shine, while the star players will always have Sunday.
It's all gotten stale. As stale as the Pro Bowl. They try & tweak it but it doesn't really matter. But as @ElPigto says, we come back to watch anyways. Skills: Now bigs vs. guards 3pt: blahblahblah who can make the most threes. Dunk: Repeated/copied dunks of previous years so fans aren't entertained (but I mean, there's only so many dunks you can do) ASG: Did an all-star draft & donation to charity; let's make it more competitive!
Dunk contest was good. 3 dunks I've never seen before. The players weren't absolute nobodies other than Smith. 3 point contest was boring, the gotta make a change to that
They would have been better off replaying the 2016 dunk contest finals on the jumbotron vs. this garbage.
Honestly the all star weekend stuff doesn’t do anything for me anymore. When I was younger I would get excited to see it. I used to be really big on the individual players but after playing and coaching I find myself far more interested in teams and not the all star skills or even the game. The players need rest so I am okay with the league having some way to keep their product in the spot light while letting most their players relax. Also the grind of the season seems to go away after the break, the symbolism of the break makes you feel like the playoffs are right around the corner. Used to not get to see guys from smaller markets much but now can see the Bucks and Suns as easily as the Lakers and Knicks. So seeing smaller market guys isn’t a selling point for the all star game any more. I am more excited about getting Trevor back and seeing how the Rockets gel with so many swing/wing players for D’Antoni to play and how much the defense steps up (it will).
True. I'd keep it around, there's nothing really to replace it. A 1 on 1 tourney would be neat though, something like that could be a lot of fun.
I was just telling someone about that earlier, it was awful. Here are some other random ideas: Knockout or 21 Dodgeball / other silly competitive games The skills contest could actually include skills. Put these guys through some actual dribbling choreography. Backwards, sharp cuts, etc. Multiple shots required. (My favorite) Maybe consider borrowing a page from the NHL and doing a 3v3 divisional all-star tourney instead of a 5v5 all-star game. There are things they could try to shake it up.
Chuck to KG: "Did you go to the Shaquillle O'Neal of kids school? You got 12 kids too? Just because you played basketball doesn't mean you have to form a basketball team." (streamable.com
What they should do is allow 3 dunks in the first round and take the best scores of 2 to the finals. It allows each dunker one bad run and a chance to display their dunks. But like I said, Saturday skills usually underwhelm because it's stale and never lives up to the expectations. That's why I enjoy the celebrity game. Lowest expectations with good entertainment ratio.
