LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 6, 2018) – The Wyoming Cowboy basketball team fell to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night in the season opener, dropping a 76-66 contest to the Gauchos at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo. Senior Justin James led the Pokes with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth career double-double. UCSB shot 51 percent from the field for the night and shot 56 percent from the three-point line in the first half.

"I thought the guys played gritty," UW head coach Allen Edwards said. "We had opportunities, but at the point where we had just a one-point deficit and we missed a free throw to tie it, after that we started gambling rather than continuing to play solid."

James did most of his damage in the second half with 17 points. He passed Marcus Bailey for 18th in career scoring, as he now has 1,375 points. James also added a team-high four assists and went 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

"What I love about J.J. is while we know his ability to play against anyone, I like the way he has believed in this process with these new guys," Edwards said. "Obviously it was a blow losing (Hunter) Thompson in the middle, but I thought J.J. did a great job of rebounding the basketball. He also led us in assists with four. He didn't shoot it particularly well tonight, especially from three. But he's special."

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Nov. 10, 2018) – Wyoming struggled from the field to open the second half opening the door for Oregon State in a 83-64 loss on Saturday afternoon inside Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. Senior guard Justin James nearly recorded a triple-double in the game with 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. He had a hand in two-thirds of the Cowboys baskets on the night. James' nine assists were the most since JayDee Luster had nine against New Mexico on Jan. 16, 2010.

"Oregon State is a very good basketball team," UW head coach Allen Edwards said. "As the game wore on our size hurt, but I was proud of the effort of our team. We didn't always do the right thing on the court tonight, but I wasn't displeased with that. What really hurt and I wasn't pleased about was the shooting from the free throw line."

Oregon State's Tres Tinkle, the Pac-12's leading returning scoring added 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead all players. The Beavers shot 52 percent from the field in the second half and held a 46-30 advantage in the paint, while out rebounding the shorthanded Cowboys 45-27.

"I told our guys I know we are down our two bigs, but we still have to compete." Edwards said. "We have a lot of little things we have to get better at whether that is rebounding or 80/20 balls."

James has recorded double-doubles in the first two games of the season. If he would have added one more assist, it would have been the first triple-double since Justin Williams against Utah on March 10, 2006, when he had 10 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks.

Sophomore Austin Mueller, who is replacing Hunter Thompson and Jordan Naughton in the post added a career-high eight points. Junior guard Jake Hendricks added a career-high 14 points. He hit four three pointers in the contest. Freshman forward Brandon Porter added 10 points in his first career start. Sophomore Hunter Maldonado, who is nursing an injury added 10 points on the night.

The Pokes shot 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three-point line. Oregon State shot 49 percent from the field for the game. Wyoming shot 45 percent from the free-point line going 9-of-20.

After the Pokes opened the game with a triple from Porter, the first points of his career, the Beavers went on a 7-0 run for a 7-3 advantage. The Pokes responded quickly though with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 9-7 lead with 16:19 left in the opening half.

The Beavers answered with a 19-2 run over seven minutes for a 26-11 advantage with 8:34 left in the frame. Wyoming struggled to put any offense together during that stretch with five turnovers.

The Pokes cut the lead to 10 points at 32-22 with 4:42 left in the first half. The Cowboys used an and-one play from James and a deep three pointer from Hendricks during the 6-0 run. Junior Lwal Dung would then cut it to eight points seconds later with a nice drop step in the paint for his first career points.

Wyoming continued to fight late in the half, as Oregon State led 41-32 into the break. Wyoming shot 44 percent from the field in the half. Wyoming had five turnovers in the first half with all of those coming in a two minute stretch.

The Beavers opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 48-34 lead three minutes into the half. Wyoming struggled opening the half 2-of-11 from the field, as the Beavers opened up a 58-39 advantage.

Oregon State added to the lead, as the Beavers hit 8-of-10 shots to build a 73-52 lead with under seven minute left in the half. OSU continued that momentum to finish off the 83-64 win over the Pokes, as Wyoming falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Pokes return to action and to the friendly confines of the Arena-Auditorium on Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. start against Grambling State.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 16, 2018) – The Pokes nearly erased an eight point halftime deficit in a 72-67 loss to Niagara on Friday evening in the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. Wyoming shot 50 percent in the second half, but clutch shooting and free throws by Niagara were too much for the Cowboys to overcome. UW falls to 1-3 overall, as the Purple Eagles move to 2-1 overall.

"What I said to the team at halftime and after the game was we were hurt by the way we started the game," UW head coach Allen Edwards said. "I thought we did a better job in the second half and the stats indicate that. We shot 30 percent in the first half and 50 percent in the second half and that was due in part to the fact that we moved the ball better in the second half which gave us opportunities to get layups at the basket or open jump shots."

Senior Justin James led the Pokes for the fourth time this season with 23 points. He scored 17 in the second half, as he also added eight rebounds. James was 7-of-8 from the free throw line and has made 24-of-last-25 dating back to Oregon State. Sophomore Hunter Maldonadoadded his second-straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Junior Jake Hendricks tied a career-high with 15 points on a career-best six field goals.

"When you think about a guy like him (Hunter Maldonado) being undersized and having to play the center spot some when we gave Austin Mueller a breather it's pretty remarkable that he gets 15 rebounds, but he's a durable kid," Edwards said. "He didn't shoot the three-ball well tonight, but other than maybe one of them I thought they were all good looks."

Wyoming outshot the Purple Eagles on the night, as Wyoming shot 40 percent with the NU going for 38 percent. Wyoming also held the advantage on the boards at 42-39. The Purple Eagles did their damage from behind the three-point line with 10 on the night. Wyoming recorded a season-high 15 turnovers, as they were turned into 15 points by Niagara.

The Cowboy offense started the contest slow, as Niagara raced out to a 9-4 lead. The Pokes opened the contest 2-of-7 from the field in the opening five minutes of play. The Purple Eagles held on to the momentum building a lead as high as nine points. The Pokes would cut the deficit to three points at 16-13 nearly halfway through the half.

The Pokes would tie the game at 16-16 with 9:47 left in the first half on a Hendricks three pointer. It was a part of a 9-0 run that saw the Cowboys hold Niagara to 1-of-9 from the field. The Pokes would take a brief lead at 19-8, but a 9-0 run by NU gave them a 27-19 advantage with 4:34 left in the half.

The Purple Eagles rode that momentum into halftime taking a 33-25 lead into the break. Wyoming struggled offensively shooting 30 percent going 9-of-30 from the field. The Purple Eagles held an advantage on the glass by a tally of 24-18.

The Pokes opened the second half with layups from Maldonado and Nyaires Redding to make it a 33-29 game a minute into the half. The Pokes tied the game at 36-36, but Marvin Prochet hit his fifth three of the game to make it 39-33 in favor of NU with 15:32 left in the contest.

The Pokes took their first lead of the game at the 11:54 mark of the second half on a James three pointer to make it a 46-45 contest. The UW lead lasted only seconds as Niagara responded with a three-pointer to take the lead back.

Niagara would later build the lead to eight at 57-59 on a Dominic Robb three-pointer with just under nine minutes left in the contest. The Pokes would make three-straight field goals to tie the game at 59-59 with 4:18 left in the second half.

Niagara's Chris Barton would hit a three pointer to make it a 62-59 game shortly after the Pokes tied the game to make it 64-61 NU with 2:45 left. Wyoming would cut the Niagara lead to one point twice late, but the Purple Eagles hit six free throws late to take the contest, 72-67.

"In the second half, I thought we fought, got back in the game and took the lead at one point, but we couldn't get key stops down the stretch when we needed them," Edwards said.

Prochet led the Purple Eagles with a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. He hit five three pointers in the game. Robb added 13 points along with 12 points each from Barton and Reheem Solomon.

The Cowboys heads to the Sunshine State for the Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans Fort Myers Tip-off. Wyoming opens the two-game tournament on Monday at 7 p.m. against Boston College with the game being televised on FS1.

James Plays Hero in 68-66 Comeback Win Over Richmond
    Pokes erase 11-point deficit
    FINAL STATS
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Nov. 21, 2018) – Senior guard Justin James scored the final five points of the game in the last 66 seconds to give the Cowboys a 68-66 comeback Victory over Richmond on Wednesday in the third-place game of the Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans Fort Myers Tip-Off in the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.

"One of the things we have been stressing with the injuries to our bigs and Hunter Maldonado not being 100 percent is our team playing hard and we have done that," Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said. "In the second half, we played with more sense of urgency. Our guys really fought hard tonight and played very well on both ends of the floor."

The Pokes trailed by 11 points in the second half and used seven-straight field goals to tie the contest and take a lead. After Richmond took the lead back, Wyoming would then erase a five-point deficit in the final 90 seconds to earn the win.

"One of the things I said to the team after the game was I thought we fought our tails off," Edwards said. "We have been banged up, but the morale has been great."

Junior Hunter Maldonado got the late comeback started followed by a triple and a smooth jumper by James for the win with 31 seconds left. Wyoming held Richmond scoreless for the final 2:41 of the ball game to move to 2-4 overall on the season.

James scored a season-high 29 points, as the Mountain West's leading scorer went 11-of-22 from the field. He also added four assists and five rebounds. Maldonado added 15 points and a team-high eight rebound giving the Pokes' 35 minutes of gritty basketball. Junior guard Jake Hendricks added 10 points hitting three triples. He also added a career-high six rebounds.

"I think Justin (James) is a terrific basketball player," Edwards said. "He has really grown from his junior year to senior season. He is really studying the game. He is as much of a coach as he is a player on the court. It is great that he sets an example like that."

The Spider's Grant Golden poured in 33 points on the night going 16-of-24 from the field. He also added a game-high nine rebounds.

The Pokes shot 45 percent from the field going 25-of-55 and went 7-of-18 from behind the arc for 39 percent. The Spiders shot 47 percent from the field, but were 41 percent in the second half, which allowed the Pokes to make the comeback.

"Early on we were sticking on to the ball, but once we moved and cut we could get to the rim," Edwards said. "We kept stressing playing defense and that really helped feed the offense. We challenged the guys in the second half and played man defense and our guys did a great job doing so."

Both teams started the contest 2-of-6 from the field four minutes into the game. The Pokes held a 6-4 advantage using the dribble drive to get the early lead. Richmond would hold the Pokes scoreless for over four minutes and used a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 lead with 13:46 left in the half.

Richmond's Golden single handily built the lead to six points at 15-9 with 12:11 left in the first frame. He scored 13 of Richmond's 15 points, as the 6-10, 265-pound Preseason All- Atlantic 10 selection opened 6-of-7 from the field.

Hendricks cut the deficit to three points with his first three pointer attempted and made of the contest making it a 20-17 game with 6:29 left in the first half. Hendricks would cut it to two points later in the half, but a timely three by Richmond made it a 30-25 contest with 3:39 left in the half.

Richmond closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 35-27 lead into the break, as Wyoming had one field goal in the final four minutes of the half. Richmond shot 52 percent from the field including hitting four timely three pointers, as all four were timed when the Pokes trailed by three or less points.

After a slow start to the second period, James and Hendricks got the Pokes going cutting a double-digit deficit to six at 41-35 in the first four minutes of the stanza. But Richmond hit three-straight field goals to build the lead back to 11 points with 13:56 left.

Wyoming made five-straight field goals from five different players to make it a 50-50 game. Senior Nyaires Redding tied the contest with his first three pointer of the season. James seconds later gave Wyoming a 52-50 lead, as it was part of an 11-0 run for the Pokes.

After Richmond tied the contest at 52-52, Maldonado added five-straight points to give Wyoming 57-52 advantage. But the Spiders tied the contest at 57-57 on a deep three from Gilyard with just under seven minutes left.

Both teams would battle until five-straight points including a three pointer, the fifth of the game from Jake Wojcik made it a 66-61 contest for Richmond with 2:41 left in the ball game.

But the Pokes would not go away, as Maldonado and James scored seven straight points to give the Pokes the 68-66 win.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Nov. 28, 2018) – Senior Justin Jamessparked a rally in the second half with a career-high 34 points, while grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds, but Wyoming (2-5 overall) fell just short in a 86-78 loss at Evansville (3-3 Overall) in the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. James is only the second player in the nation with over 30 points and 20 rebounds in a game this season.

"What I shared with the team regardless of the situation you have to play a perfect game to win on the road," head coach Allen Edwards said. "We didn't shoot the ball well in the first half. We defended better in the first half. It was a tale of two halves."

James grabbed his 10th career double-double and his third this season. He recorded his previous career-high of 33 points twice last season with the last coming against San Jose State. James recorded a Mountain West high this season with his 20 rebounds. It was the most by a Cowboy since Hayden Dalton recorded 20 against Fresno State in 2017.

Redshirt freshman Hunter Thompson returned to the lineup for the Pokes, but Wyoming was without the services of second leading scorer sophomore Hunter Maldonado. Thompson added a career-high 15 points.

Wyoming shot 44 percent from the field going 26-of-59 from the field, despite shooting 1-of-12 from the field to open the game. Evansville also shot 44 percent from the field, but hit eight threes to the Pokes four on the night.

The Pokes did shoot 82 percent from the free throw line going 22-of-27, as James went 11-of-14.

Both teams started the contest slow offensively with the first bucket not going in until the 16:11 mark of the contest, as the Purple Aces scored on a layup off a Cowboy turnover. Thompson got the Pokes on the board for the first time on the night with just under 14 minutes left making it a 4-2 game.

The Pokes' offensive troubles continued, as Evansville moved to an 8-2 advantage. Wyoming opened the game 1-of-12 from the field until James added an and-one play to make it an 8-5 game with 11:15 left in the first stanza.

Evansville extended its lead to eight points on the first three of the game for wither team with 9:25 left in the frame making it a 15-7 game. The lead was later moved to 15 points at 24-9 with six minutes left, as the Pokes were 3-of-21 from the field to that point.

James and Taylor would get the Pokes back into the contest, as James had 12 points in the first half and Taylor added five to make it a 33-24 deficit at the half. Wyoming shot only 26 percent from the field in the half going 1-of-10 from behind the three point line.

The Pokes got to work early in the first half with layups from James and Redding to cut the Purple Aces lead to five points at 34-29. A three-pointer from Austin Mueller made it a 40-36 game 16:45 left in the game.

After the Purple Aces extended the lead to seven points, a pair of technical free throws by James, and a pair of free throws from Thompson followed by a layup from James made it a 45-44 game in favor of Evansville with just under 14 minutes remaining. But back-to-back buckets pushed the UE lead back to six seconds later.

The Pokes took their first lead of the game on a 6-0 with 8:31 left in the game. James gave the Pokes the first lead of the contest, as it was 63-62 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining. This time Hendricks hit a pair of technical free throws to spark the rally.

The two teams exchanged the lead until back-to-back layups from Evansville gave them a 76-73 lead with 1:57 remaining. Evansville would add a three pointer with ninety seconds left and made their free throws late to pick up the victory.

"Our heads are going stay up and this is a growing pain with the injuries we have had," Edwards said.

The Purple Aces were led in scoring by four scorers in double-figures. John Hall finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Noah Frederking added 17 points on the night.

The Cowboys make their return to the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday afternoon for a showdown with Front Range foe Northern Colorado at 4 p.m
