Marvel's Black Panther movie? It's finally moving forward

A movie based around the comic-book character Black Panther is back in development by Marvel Studios. But the studio's pick to write the script comes out of left field.

According to Heatvision, Marvel has tapped Mark Bailey to pen a new screenplay around the Panther, who is considered the first mainstream black superhero. Bailey comes from the documentary world, having worked on HBO projects like Pandemic: Facing AIDS and Ghosts of Abu Ghraib. He's also been developing a feature-film version of a nonfiction book titled The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon.

On the surface, none of these projects would seem to make Bailey an obvious choice to write a Black Panther movie, but then again, people thought the idea of Jon Favreau directing Iron Man was strange, and look how that turned out.

The Black Panther, whose real name is T'Challa, has ruled the fictional African nation of Wakanda and been a player in the Marvel Universe since his 1966 debut in the Fantastic Four comic book. Actor Wesley Snipes and director John Singleton have both been attached to a Black Panther movie at various times, while the project has passed from Columbia Pictures to Lionsgate before finally coming back to Marvel.

Beyond this year's Thor and Captain America, next year's The Avengers and 2013's Iron Man 3, Marvel has yet to announce what its next batch of projects will be. But Black Panther has supposedly been one of the lesser-known Marvel heroes that the studio has been eager to bring to the big screen.

Actor Speculation with Will Smith at the top.

They should really see if these other marvel/comic films bomb before green lighting any more.

I hope they cast a white actor to play this role just like how they try to make the new spiderman black. It's already weird seeing black jesus and black santa claus. I'm not racist. I'm just saying

Who is "they" and when did "they" try and cast a black Spider-Man? I assume you are talking about the twitter/facebook campaign to make Donald Glover Spider-Man, which was a joke btw.

Edit: I actually don't know what race Jesus was suppose to be, but given he was born in Jerusalem, I assume he looked like the people living there and it really shouldn't matter. Don't want to turn this into D&D.

This one has every bit the potential of Thor and Cap'n America.

It's going to suck so bad, they might as well give Black Panther the Mach 5.

Black Panther is a Canon Sue. I read that they canceled a Runaways movie they had in the works because they didn't want to over-saturate the market or something, and then this? Boo, Marvel.
Jerusalem, Bethlehem, somewhere in Israel anyway. ;)

I hope they do this right. Aside from Cap, Iron Man and Thor, Black Panther is one of the top dogs in the Avengers. Man, why can't Hollywood just copy a winning formula from other great superhero flicks like The Dark Knight or Iron Man 1?

Maybe they can make Vibe into the next super hero movie.

    Paco Ramone
Paco Ramone's career as Vibe began shortly after Aquaman disbanded the original Justice League. When young Paco heard that a new Justice League was forming in his own hometown of Detroit, he decided to give up his position as the leader of a local street gang, Los Lobos, to join up.[1] What made Ramone a candidate was his metahuman ability to emit powerful vibratory shock waves.
Vibe's presence on the team caused Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter to harbor some strong doubts about the new JLA, particularly after he got the League involved in a rumble with a rival gang.[2] However, Vibe soon proved his mettle during the League's battles against Cadre,[3] Anton Allegro,[4] and Amazo.[5] He stayed with the League through the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, when his powers played a vital role in defeating Despero.[6]
During Darkseid's assault on Earth during the Legends mini-series, the Justice League of America was disbanded and Paco left his JLA comrades to seek the familiar solace of the streets. Vibe was attacked by one of Professor Ivo's androids, and became the first Justice League member to be killed in the line of duty.[7] The Martian Manhunter brought Vibe's body back to the League's mountain sanctuary, where Vibe was laid to rest in a cryogenic chamber. However, Paco's dead form has twice been resurrected by evil-doers.[8][9]

They should just make it into a p*rn because the title sound like a porno movie. Totally not interested and this movie will suck like the The Phantom. Boring character and history and power so no one is going to care.

I think a lot of the difference is that batman and iron man are based on technology so the stories are somewhat believable/relatable.. It's more difficult to bring magic into it and still make that connection.
