In my company, we have a list of approved hotels and you generally stay at one of those if you want to be reimbursed for your travel expenses. If you don't, you explain the reason for your variance in your expense report, and it's up to procurement and your boss whether you get reimbursed or not. We also keep a registry to declare any possible conflicts of interest you might have, including businesses you own that might do business with the company. And Compliance and Ethics policy says you must recuse yourself from the decision-making process if the company is considering a vendor with whom you have an interest. In this corporate environment, if my boss owned a hotel - or, hell, an AirBnB - I would specifically avoid it so I don't have to argue with Compliance and with Procurement about whether I followed all the rules appropriately. If I owned a hotel or an AirBnB, the last thing I want is for one my subordinates to go stay there, and I have to explain to Compliance that I did not influence the decision in any way. In our government, it's the opposite -- they steer toward the appearances of impropriety instead of away from them.
