Morey rebuilt a team with a new identity, supporting cast, and coach, going from a .500 club to third best record in the league. To me, that's a bigger accomplishment than taking advantage of an anomalous cap space jump to add an MVP to a 73 win team. If the roles were reversed and we were the ones that signed Durant I'd be saying the same thing. "Gee, Durant wants to join my team. Should I sign him or not?" Why give Meyers the EOY award for a no brainer?
For real though, the Warriors took a huge gamble in choosing KD over Harrison Barnes so they definitely deserve Executive of the Year.
It's more that GSW got fortunate (if not lucky) on these contracts Curry was injured (with ankle surgery) the year before his extension, and only played 26 games scoring 14.7 ppg. At that time, he was still not a clear Max player. Many ppl thought it was stupid to extend him at $10m/yr. (Max was $13.6m.) So it was a risk to do so, and bet that he wouldn't continue being injury prone, making $10m/yr a good bet, but they were in a stronger negotiating position with him....Curry was less fortunate than Myers. Klay was signed for the Max in 2015, so GSW actually caved on that. They tried to sign him for less. Green was signed for near Max contract ,,,, $1m below Max in 2015. The fact Klay and Green were free agents the year before the big jump in Salary Cap in 2016 is what made them fortunate/lucky wrt contracts.
This is exactly right. Also note that Draymond was an RFA. Golden State got super fortunate with the timing of the cap jump. That's it.
Here another thing: I bet 80% of the GM's (including Maury) would have traded Klay for Love. Because Love was a high level all star at the time and most GM's like star ****ing all stars. Myers didn't and trusted in Klay and the team he is building.
True....but everyone says that was all due to Jerry West telling them not to pull the trade....right? Who actually did West have to convince *not* to pull the trade -- Myers or the owners? We can't give all credit to West, then say it was due to Myers, just because we are trying to justify why he won the award.
You are funny. Cavs GM did what besides riding on LBJ? All the guys he signed this year turned out to be useless in the playoff. And the only reason he got LBJ a few years back was LBJ wanted to go back home and redeem himself.
So should he win every single year as the Warriors continue to dominate? IMO should be about the past year, and nobody does more for his team than Morey on a consistent basis.
Let's be honest though, the Warriors GM wanted to as well but if I recall it had something to do with not wanting to take back bad contracts. Also, you know who else loves All-Stars? The owners of the teams. They bring in money and the GM wants to make the owner happy.
Why does the executive of the year discussion always focus on free agency? Morey has recently gotten some real solid contributions from some pretty average draft picks, and I haven't really seen it recognised anywhere, not even on Clutchfans. He got a starting C in Capela with the 25th pick in 2015, as well as solid rotation players at 18 and 32 in 2015 (Dekker and Harrell). That's a pretty good return on all of those picks. But it's still hard to argue against Myers winning to be honest. He signed KD, and as a result, the Warriors are the unbackable favourite to win every year for the next 5 years. Even if it was all KD's decision, Myers set the foundation for GSW to be an attractive destination. And yep, they got lucky that the salary cap had that one off ridiculous spike, but he put together a plan and executed on it, and the Warriors won the championship. In that context, it's very hard to argue Morey deserved it, especially after the Rockets playoff run exposed a lack of depth in the frontcourt, and considering the Rockets had the capacity to add another player like Luis Scola down the stretch of the regular season to address that lack of depth. Missing out by two votes is probably about right. Morey has had a pretty good run the past few years, but still can't really be considered the cream of the crop.
Myers was actually going to go through with the trade.. it was stopped by Jerry West. Logo is such a big part of their success
