Simmons played last season with the Indianapolis Colts, after three years with the New England Patriots. He has 58 catches for 998 yards and six touchdowns in the NFL. Simmons was drafted in the second round by the Patriots in 1998. The Texans also claimed safety Hakim Akbar off waivers from the Patriots. Akbar played on special teams in six of the first nine games of the season before going on injured reserve in November.
