    Columbus, Ohio
Leading moderate Democrats forcefully argued this week that the party can embrace a robust agenda of change while still praising capitalism and downplaying income inequality.

In other words, everything the empowered liberal base has spent a year and a half mobilizing against.

Democrats gathered here in Ohio’s capital city on Thursday and Friday in what was an opening salvo of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, part of a conference organized by the center-left think tank Third Way.

The longtime Washington-based group was unveiling the findings of a year-long assessment launched after the 2016 election, hoping to convince potential presidential contenders that they don’t have to adopt the hard-left agenda and style of a Bernie Sanders progressive.

What definition of 'far left' are we using?

Well in this context it's talking about the socialists and other anti-capitalists though I understand how with the left constantly moving left it's hard to pin down what the current "far left" is. Give it a few weeks and that "far left" might become the base.

Agreed. I think by "far left" most people now mean the "Bernie wing" but with a large helping of identity politics on the plate as well. I think our friend glynch would say the "moderate" democrats are those that are economically "comfortable" and fear rocking the neo-liberal, establishment boat.

    Non-fascists = far left.

The Republicans are running actual nazis as Congressional candidates in some races.

So naturally, the problem is that Democrats who want medicare for all, an insanely popular idea, are too extreme

On income equality, i they'd be better off advocating a simple $10 minimum wage. No need to complicate the issue with a political term like income equality. More people can relate to $10 and the majority who make over $10 will be more sympathetic to people not making $10 an hour.

Minimum wage hasnt increased in 9 years.

Money isn't the reason people win elections. Donald Trump should at least be given credit for that.

He didn't spend a bunch of PAC money and Clinton spent far more money. He out communicated her.

It's so easy to trigger the trolls by...talking about popular things that are good for society.

Looks like you guys still haven't figured this one out yet.

The people that want us to become a welfare state and at the same time have open borders. What could possibly go wrong?

The "hard left" is not going to vote for Trump in 2020. But push them away, and they might not vote at all. Ocasio-Cortez has the right strategy - for the safest blue district, go for the most progressive ideas. Play it safer for other districts. 2018 primaries and mid-term results will naturally drive 2020. Pre-mature to lock down what you don't know now.

The Democratic party should embrace Ocasio and its Bernie wing.

They don't have to convert, but they SHOULD pick out popular ideas that they can run on. The message of Berniecrats is pure and it promises hope and change to a lot of people, it is not divisive in any way (unless you are someone looking to horde as much wealth as possible I guess) and Democratic leaders would be wise to not ignore it or pass it off as nothing.

The Democrats have to get their base excited about something. They have to ignore all the fear mongering on the right that "People don't like this, people won't vote for this," and all of the concern trolling from the right because Democrats have to understand that NOTHING...NOTHING...will convince hard right conservatives to vote for them. N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Forget it.

If these people are telling you that they won't vote for a socialist like Ocasio or Bernie, so what? They won't vote for a moderate Democrat like Obama either, they wouldn't vote for Manchin if he ran for president. Forget trying to appease these people and forget their opinions in relation to the Democratic party and liberal ideas.

Bro.... if the term "income inequality" is too complicated for most Americans, then we are REALLY screwed and I need to start making plans to move my family to Ireland, away from the inevitable Chinese/Russian invasion.

Yeah........ I remember the dangerous fools that pointed to Venezuela and Chavez as some sort of positive thing. I think one of them still posts on here and cannot accept that Chavez was a ruthless dictator.

Most people are too ignorant as to what socialism really is. Likewise, what some of those labeled as socialists are pushing is not really socialism.

Still, what seems to be forgotten is that socialists tend to eventually want to do away with real elections or multi party states.

Not unique to the left, the rights embracing is fascist style leadership is concerning as well.

I said too political meaning too political. Just stick to actual money in terms of what people need and not make it a bigger issue of rights, that's what i mean by complicating the subject
