    http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2013/jul/25/grizzlies-players-owners-disagree-over-tennessee/

Strange stuff. NBA and NHL players must pay $2500 per game (up to $7500 per year) for games played in Memphis and the proceeds do not go to the state or city government, but to the owners of the Grizzlies and NHL's Predators. It doesn't matter if you are Lebron James or a scrub on a 10-day minimum wage contract who doesn't actually get on the floor, it's $2500 per game.

And now the players are fighting to repeal it while the owners of the teams and the arena are fighting to keep it. This publicity should help with the Grizzlies' future free agent pursuits.

Edit: Noticed that I posted in the wrong forum. Please move. Thank you.

Ouch.... the said tax wont hurt players with million dollar contracts, but it will hurt players of the 10 day contracts more.

What disgusts me is that the money doesnt go to the state so they could build public infrastructure, instead it goes to the pockets of owners.

    Talk about corporate greed. Tsk

Might very well not hold up in court...but nobody on a 10-day contract is going to sue the league/state of Tennessee/raise a big snit about it.

That's what the players unions are for.

    Players Union.
    Also, this is ridiculous.
That tax should go to the government for public good, not for the team owners to line their pocket books. Utter bull****.

I could understand Detroit( and proceeds go to the city) but why Memphis?

That's like 27,500 per team. How come coaches, mascots, and trainers are exempt?

I'm a little floored by this. I guess it is in part because Tennessee doesn't have an income tax on wages (but they do on interest/dividends). I can tell you from experience, it isn't the only quirky thing in their tax code.

Given the publicity, I think it falls. It could stand if it was a fee assessed to visiting teams, but not so with players. It's just bad PR and bad labor relations. And, it sounds like the Predators aren't going to fight for it.

Dumb question, but don't players already get taxed for playing games in other states?

Only if there is an income tax in the state.

Tennessee doesn't have a state income tax.

    (lol, thanks again)

Well, never a fan of flat taxes, but I wonder how much on average is taken out per game/player for other states.

Yep, you don't have to pay if you don't wear a jock strap.
