Mavs get G Terry in four-player swap with Hawks Aug. 3, 2004 By Mike Kahn SportsLine.com Executive Editor Tell Mike your opinion! A good portion of this summer in the NBA has been spent waiting for the Dallas Mavericks to continue reshaping their roster. Advertisement Sources confirm they took one more step by agreeing to deal Antoine Walker, Tony Delk and a first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Alan Henderson and Jason Terry. The deal will not be announced until Wednesday because the NBA offices were closed Tuesday. The ramifications are palpable. By giving up nearly $15 million in contracts with Henderson and Terry, it allowed the Hawks to absorb the more than $14 million of Walker and $3 million of Delk, yet retain enough room to sign free agent center Erick Dampier. Sources continue to insist the Hawks aren't as interested in Dampier as they are in turning him over to the Memphis Grizzlies and acquiring Bonzi Wells and, hoping, for Stromile Swift, whom the Grizzlies have been reluctant to trade. Acquiring Terry removes some of the pressure on the Mavericks, who exposed themselves at point guard when Steve Nash left as a free agent to Phoenix. The Mavs had already dealt Antawn Jamison to Washington for Christian Laettner, Jerry Stackhouse and a first-round pick they turned into Wisconsin point guard Devin Harris. Although most people are very high on Harris, he doesn't figure to be ready for the responsibility of competing at the top of the Midwest Division, and Terry -- although real a combo-guard like Delk or better -- should relieve some of the anxiety in Dallas. Furthermore, Terry also gives them a young guard whom they can move along to the New Jersey Nets if they eventually decide to make a major bid to obtain Jason Kidd. Kidd has made it apparent that he wants out, now that the Nets have lost Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles and Rodney Rogers in moves that dramatically reduced the salary structure with no starters signed in return. But with more than $90 million left on his contract and micro-surgery on his left knee on July 1 that could keep him out until the first of the year, not even the ultimate maverick Mark Cuban will gamble on that until they see how he responds. After having witnessed that similar surgery ruin nearly the entire 2003-04 season for Chris Webber, Jamal Mashburn and Allan Houston, such an enormous investment in Kidd -- particularly since he will be 32 in March -- remains tenuous. Completing this deal is only the start of a busy summer for Mavs president Donnie Nelson, though. In a smaller deal last week they shipped forward Danny Fortson to Seattle for center Calvin Booth, who along with Stackhouse and Tariq Abdul-Wahad, take up an absurd amount of salary cap space. Over the next three years, they will cost at least $63 million, so you can count on team Nelson continuing to hammer the phones to alleviate this log jam. http://www.sportsline.com/nba/story/7548158
Great trade for the Mavs. I believe Henderson has 1 or 2 years left on his contract and Terry has 2 more.
Wow...the Grizzlies would be willing to trade Bonzi Wells AND Stromile Swift for Erick Dampier? Is it just me or does anyone else think that Dampier just isn't that great of a player? As smart as Memphis has been about player acquisitions the last little while, there is NO way I would give up those two for Dampier, regardless of the fact that they need a big man. Interesting stuff, though--Terry strikes me as completely different from Nash. I wonder how long it's going to take him to blend in with that offense.
What the hell do the Hawks want Bonzi Wells for? They've drafted six small forward/shooting guards in the last two years plus have Al Harrington. What in gods name do they need another swingman for?
I wish we had gotten Terry. He's a good shooter and can play the PG position. He doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective, he's pretty good at moving off the ball, which is a perfect when you have T-Mac. All we'd need him to do is bring it up and feed T-Mac or Yao, then play off the ball, get himself open. He's a great spot up shooter from everywhere, and his contract is decent. I would've taken him for the TE and a draft pick if possible.
good trade for dallas first because Terry is a good replacement for Nash at the point. Second because now they're got rid of Walker
Jerry knows he's got to have somebody in the middle to tangle with Yao otherwise the Rockets roll through them when they figure out how to play. He's gotta have some anchor in the middle to have a chance to get past us in future years. Dampier is being highly overvalued for that reason. I think Delk would be a good fit in Houston at the point. Wouldn't mind seeing a deal with Atlanta for him and someting for the TE.
Too bad that's not possible under the CBA for three months/until December 15th. Now, it'd take them into the regular season - and what player is going to sign under those circumstances, anyway? Nice try, CBS; next time, get the facts straight - it's not hard!
