    March of Dimes shows Texas infant mortality at between 5.5 - 6.5 deaths per 1,000 births over ten year time-frame; Massachusetts between 4 - 5 deaths per 1,000; both less than one percent.

    Or maybe the insane Texas legislature's war on women's health is starting to cost lives?

    More blood on the hands of Texas Republicans. This time, these children will all grow up mother-less.

    The stats are wrong. There are improvements that should be made, but
    1) US reporting is quite different from the rest of the world. In the US, hospitals do the reporting. In the EU, a statistical department that does after-the-fact annual household phone surveys collects the data. This biases the results downwards.
    2) Infant mortality is defined differently within the US vs the rest of the world. Many developed countries don't report deaths to infants within the first 24 hours as they are not yet considered live births.
    3) The US spends a ton more than ever other country on neonatal care and NICU. They try like crazy to save infant lives a lot more than other nations do.

    So Texas does have issues, but it should be discussed within the realm of US state-by-state data.

    -This is not a political post. While I have my leanings, as an aspiring fake academic, my first bias is always towards what the data and research says. Compare US states to US states, because in the hardcore policy world, it's too different to make accurate with other countries in this statistic. The misinformation is mainly for garnering headlines and attention.

    http://kff.org/other/state-indicato...t Deaths per 1,000 Live Births","sort":"asc"}

    It seems like Texas is middle of the pack at 5.8 deaths/1000.

    The bottom of the list seems to be the SEC.

    This statistic is not on infant mortality rate. It's maternal mortality rates (death of the pregnant woman). Kim, you made a very strong statement without basic reading comprehension yourself.

    It was. The comparison was that US rates are rising and that Texas rate doubled in 2 years. The only comparison to the rest of the world was that the rates are decreasing elsewhere (which makes sense - it should be decreasing everywhere).

    Honestly, dude, ask yourself: what does state appropriated abortion clinic funding have to do with women who die as a result of a live birth? The OP's article refers to the increase in maternal deaths with a link to a story about poor diet among pregnant women. Abortion clinics, really?

    What does "thinking" have to do with this? I am interested in "knowing". Oh, wait, here we go:

    And remember, the Texas legislature meets once every two years. So, cuts in 2011 wouldn't start (at the earliest) until the 2012 fiscal year which would begin September 1, 2013. Hmmm, kind of throws a wrench and that thar fancy correlation of y'all's.
