That's right, boys. Tell me: do we need to put the data under oath?

    NO! Because data don't lie.

    MAGA! MAGA! MAGA!

    ---

U.S. coal exports increased by 61% in 2017 as exports to Asia more than doubled

The United States exported 97.0 million short tons (MMst) of coal in 2017, a 61% (36.7 MMst) increase from the 2016 level. Exports to Asia more than doubled from 15.7 MMst in 2016 to 32.8 MMst in 2017, although Europe continues to be the largest recipient of U.S. coal exports.

Too bad Brazil may look elsewhere due to steel tariff. But nevertheless, got to give credit when it’s due...

A cyclone knocked out mines and railroad lines and interrupted coal deliveries for months after hitting Australia in March, forcing China and other Asian countries to turn to the United States to replace lost coking coal. Australian production and exports are slowly returning to normal.

Producers in Indonesia, another major Asian exporter, had idled several important mines in response to falling prices but are reversing course as prices rise.

The most lasting change — at least potentially — has come in China, which in 2016 decided to cut mine production capacity and rely more on natural gas. The government feared that many inefficient coal companies would go bankrupt, resulting in mass layoffs and financial stress for state-owned banks that lent them money.

A 15 percent production cut this year increased local coal prices by 40 percent, according to the International Energy Agency, leading to surging imports and higher global prices.

Because pissing liberals off is more important to conservatives right now than actually governing.

Is there something good about clinging to a dying hazardous industry? I mean it is great for the few owners who are still clinging to this. But should anyone else be happy?

Well I'd say the actual coal miners are happy. If you live in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, western North Carolina, etc.. coal is all you really have as far as work. I do sympathize for them. We've spent 20 years talking about retraining workers there and transforming economies with nothing to show for it. And it only makes sense that people there are incredibly jaded.

The industry is terrible and should go but I really think people need to stop and understand why people in Appalachia are so vocal about saving the coal industry. There simply isn't anything else and these are already poor areas that are going to become much poorer in the coming decades.

the Appalachian folks (WV, eastern Kentucky, western North Carolina, etc) need to learn from Pittsburg, PA who, at one time, was
the heart of America's steel industry

For decades Pittsburg was saddled w the same economic hardship/stress prevailing in WV and neighboring Applalachian regions.
Pittsburg has transformed its economic landscape, the city no longer has a steel plant.

Pittsburg's current economic foundation includes health care and education industries, as well as robotics and banking industries

It's great if you're on the north coast of Russia and want more shipping season available. Otherwise, for most of the planet, it will royally suck if we help spew more carbon in to the atmosphere. This is about as certain as gravity at this point. #MAGA

Well in fairness, "pissing liberals off" usually just means doing anything positive for the country, using common sense or logic, or protecting civil rights these days. When liberals set themselves up to be "pissed off" by good news for the US, people in the US end up happy when they are pissed off and get upset when they are happy.

A US industry doing well shouldn't "piss off" anyone.

If you don't understand that, you need to step outside your bubble for a while and re-evaluate what is going on.

Pittsburgh is a city. That isn't fair at all. These are poor rural communities with little resources. If you wonder why everyone from those regions are always angry, its responses like this. You don't magically create a health care economy. That requires a strong education system (which these regions don't have), universities (also lacking), infrastructure (really lacking), etc...

We've been promising to transform these economies for over 2 decades with nothing to show for it. And the entire economy of these regions is rapidly evaporating. You can't tell a coal miner with a straight face, go do what Pittsburgh is doing. And the ironic thing is that Appalchia is historically one of the biggest hotbeds of socialism in the US. But everyone (Democrats and Republicans) have basically done nothing to advance the region beyond coal. So can you really blame them for wanting to keep coal? Either the US commits to investing and transforming the region or we need to shut up and show a little empathy. But the sort of arrogant comments about how West Virginia needs to embrace Pittsburgh is down right insulting.

For reference, the Deep South was historically driven by agriculture. How many farms do you see in Mississippi today? The state is permanently poor and its left communities with little hope or opportunity. This is the future of Appalachia. Their one industry is disappearing and they're on their way to permanent poverty. And as Americans we should have a little more empathy and understanding.

The comparison of a city with infrastructure and universities and corporations and a million people in the area with decent education is a non starter.

I believe vast majority of the people in this country want what just about everyone want, a good job, nice living environment, good education for the kids and good standard of living. People want the country to do better as a nation. Everything have a trade off, for example, tougher environmental regulations could make it cost more for the businesses in this country but it will provide cleaner living environment. However, too much regulation will choke off many industries, balance is the key. If you were living in contaminated places where oil or hazardous substances were coming out of your water, you would not be complaining about EPA regulations. Extreme views will not help this country, I always believed in moderation.

The same folks in WV, KY and NC should be pissed off about tariffs... as coal-importing countries retaliate with tariffs of the own.
