This thread's poll is just a quick question to see what y'all think. I should probably post this on a Monday, so results might be skewed.

Question: What % of mar1juana sales in CO was Recreational license sales vs Medicinal license sales. They are separate business licenses. The Medicinal license is much harder to get.

I've promised the other mar1juana threads that I would be posting the financial numbers for Colorado since I have access to this beyond what national media might say. I'm trying to report the actual CO audit reports, plus new industry income that supports the trade, which was also previously illegal. So, excuse me if I'm slow.

I thought this Poll would be interesting to start, as we post more numbers for direct, legislated Tax Revenues and indirect supporting Businesses for legalization.

The goal of this thread is to document how much total legal/taxable money CO has created with legalization, which Texas legislature is sure to be watching.

max spread? 99% Rec 1% medicinal
min spread? 1% rec 99% medicinal.

I can surmise based on previous calculations that the spread will fall in between those two parameters.

    Recreational 42.0%
    Medicinal 42.0%
The other 16% was in the form of cash payments that were mistaken for a new crop and promptly smoked.

I dunno...but when I lived there I had a Red Card and it was totally worth it given the difference in price vs recreational.

Not sure if I was clear in the OP wrt to "licenses." I was talking about the license for businesses to sell, not the buyer.

As Disciple of RP says, there is still a card for Medicinal. Recreational buys are open to anyone with just cash and a DL. So, there are literally two separate doors to walk through. (Why did I use the word "literally"? As if there was a figurative alternative. Not sure why I'm going off on this tangent, but it does bother me.)

There are essentially three business licenses in CO, like TABC licenses for selling beer/wine only vs all liquor. For mar1juana, you have two for selling it (Recreational vs Medicinal) and one for growing it (the Cultivator License, wholesaler). My understanding is you can't be a Cultivator (farmer) and dispensary seller at the same time.

I don't think the Texas legislature cares much about raising revenue. If they did, casino gambling would be legal in TX right now.

The TX legislature only cares about keeping the southern baptists happy while at the same time lining their own pockets with cash from lobbyists.

Oh, they will fight for your right to carry a firearm anywhere and everywhere, but god forbid you want to light up a joint or play a hand of poker.

It's really sad that such a beautiful state is saddled with such an out of touch, corrupt government.

You're right to an extent. The police and prison industrial complexes make money hand over fist from weed being illegal. Keep in mind that 70% of Texas prisons are run by private companies, and that police departments get to keep seizures of money associated with drugs.

It's been shown that legalized weed money is a drop in the bucket compared to these two things.

Look, if you guys want to legalize it and fall into the Soviet's master plan to make us lazy and allow the return & rise of Soviet Russia. Ugh, why can't people just be moral and drown their liver in alcohol instead??

I agree that the private companies will fight tooth and nail to not allow this but will their money and influence be strong enough to win a vote? IDK, but legalization is trending up all across the states.

It maybe premature to put value on what a legal cannabis industry can add to the local economy. The Bob Marley cannabis company just got $75M from private investors. It is like the gold rush right now when it comes to this industry. It is so young that there has to be so much more investment opportunities that nobody has thought of. You don't necessarily have to buy and sell the product, you can provide services to the people in the industry.

Colorado cops who used to bust MJ farms are now making extra money by protecting the industry's cash money and product.

    Aceshigh7 and Xerobull,

You might not be looking at the complete picture. Growers and sellers need security guards, too? Before it was illegal. Now it's legal. To say Texas doesn't care about money, is kinda silly. They care more about the Baptists and one lobby group (prisons).

mar1juana is a cash crop. Crops have very big support industries. For instance, I guarantee you the cultivators in CO are using more energy than all the Prisons in Texas combined.

    So, that's one Industry:

Energy/Tech (venture capitalists are all over this)
    Labs/Testing (FDA mandates testing)
Security (might get bigger than the prison industry)
Banking (right now its all cash as no one trusts the FDIC banks, because of seizures)

The last one might very well dwarf everything else, and is what Texas is looking at, right now. Xerobull, so the police depts and judges, who you say are lining their pockets over drug money, will stop legal banking of legal drug money?

What method of accounting is used to determine sales by dollar value? From what I understand all mar1juana sales in the US are on a cash basis as banks do NOT want to authorize transactions for the purchase and sale of a nationally controlled substance.

Please don't construe what I said as anti-weed. I'm pro legalization of reasonably benign recreational drugs. Just putting out there that there are some powerful private interests against it right now.

You have good and concise arguments. It's just an uphill battle in Texas, which is very business friendly to established interests.
