Uhh.....that's St. Augustine grass. people pay a lot of money to water and grow that stuff. I know you were joking, but that might actually be the ONLY thing Mrs. JB suggests you kill with chemicals.
Just out of curiosity, if you want to kill the St. Augustine grass in your lawn...um...then what do you have growing in your lawn?
I know it's St Augustine but is it supposed to grow all weird like that? It's like grass on steriods.
http://www.triangleturf.com/augustine.html Nodal roots have formed along the lower side of a stolon of St. Augustine grass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Family Poaceae), and the associated node has given rise sylleptically to a new shoot.
Ok...so I'm an idiot. I guess I'll quit pulling it out by hand. It just seemed to grow weird compared to the rest of the turf which looks good. I've been in the house a year now, been following a good fertilizer schedule and like how the grass looks overall. I just wish we'd get a good soaking rain.
St. Augustine is the prevalent grass in SE Texas. Personally, if I had to choose, I'd pick Tiffway Bermuda, though I hear it's pretty expensive...
The best, absolute best, solution for keeping weeds away is to keep your lawn thick and healthy. A well fed, well watered, thick lawn will keep almost every weed possible away. I use Scotts turf builder every 6 weeks, religiously. In addition, I water it 3 times a week for 30 mins. Last, I cut it long (3 inches). Believe it or not, I have won "Yard of the month" 8 times in the 19 months I have lived here. I would have and should have won the other 11 months, but they obviously have some sort of rule about not giving the award to someone 2 months in a row. And before anyone asks, I will be keeping my Clutchie for Most Underrated Poster on the same shelf as my Yard of the Month awards.
Well, I don't like to brag .............but: Our lawn is so nice, I even found a bunny rabbit outside when I went to take photos.
you just took those pictures this afternoon? Nice lawn and house, by the way. I can see why you've won it.
Very nice. I need to go back to letting my grass grow a little more. I went down a notch because of neighbor peer pressure. My yard actually looks a lot better than his so I need to go back to what got me there. I noticed the flowers by your trees. As I mentioned in another thread, I listen to Gardenline on 950 usually every weekend. One thing he always mentions is that you shouldn't make a flower bed out of your tree area...he says you don't want the flowers competing with the tree. Have you had any problems? My Crepe Myrtles look like crap right now...still haven't bloomed. I hate edging with a passion.
