LA Clippers forward Luc Mbah a Moute may not return this season

According to Dan Woike of the LA Times, LA Clippers head coach Doc Rivers does not know whether or not Luc Mbah a Moute will be able to return this season.

The LA Clippers have mostly been able to remain injury-free for the 2018-2019 regular season, but that isn’t without exception — especially when it comes to forward Luc Mbah a Moute.

Since signing with the Clippers on a one-year deal over the summer, Mbah a Moute has logged a mere 61 minutes for his former team this season. He last played on October 23 in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Since then, Mbah a Moute’s status has been considered day-to-day while he deals with knee soreness. There have been several times when he’s supposedly been close to returning as well — just last week, the 32-year-old was considered a game-time decision against the Los Angeles Lakers. But it seemed clear to the team that he wasn’t able to play, and ever since, his situation seems to have worsened.

Mbah a Moute was ruled out once again for Tuesday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, and before the game began, the media got some information about his status per Head Coach Doc Rivers.

According to the LA Times’ Dan Woike, Rivers said that he “[doesn’t] know if we’re going to have [Mbah a Moute] this season or not”.

This certainly isn’t a good sign for Clippers fans, since Rivers hasn’t been this explicit about Mbah a Moute’s return al season long. Up until this point, he’s never mentioned the possibility that the forward could be out for the season, and seemed to speculate that he would return in the near future.

It’s as puzzling an injury as you’ll see in professional sports, but fortunately the Clippers have seemed to fare well without him this year. Plus, the Clippers were finally able to have Wilson Chandler play significant minutes in Tuesday’s loss, taking over the role that Mbah a Moute would presumably have if he were to return.

Chandler, who came over to LA as part of the Tobias Harris trade, has appeared in 38 combined games this season for the LA Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers. His 6.6 points per game are a career-low, but given his inconsistent health and low number of minutes, it makes sense as to why he hasn’t looked entirely like himself.

If Mbah a Moute doesn’t return this season, it’s hard to imagine him earning another contract with the Clippers unless he takes the minimum. LA won’t want to make any significant moves that could compromise cap space, and betting on a player who missed 78 games the season prior with a concerning injury seems foolish.

If Mbah a Moute does find a way to return this season, it’s likely that he’d be used in limited capacity unless the Clippers trust he can play significant minutes.

With Ariza fading on defense and Luc’s injury issues, Morey was pretty spot on with not bringing them back. I wonder if anyone outside the fandom will give him credit for that?

Never. Why have serviceable role players like Rivers, Faried, Clark, or even House when you can have a role player that separated the same shoulder twice last year, didn't get surgery on said shoulder, and is not going to return this season due to a knee injury?

Glad for Luc that it's not his shoulder again.

But it's crazy how far we've come. From everyone decrying Morey's unwillingness to retain either Ariza or LMAM, to both those players not being as good as last year, to the Farieds and the Rivers working out...things are looking up for the Rockets!

I wonder what it will be next year that the fanbase and media will rag Morey for? Didn't resign Faried/Rivers/House? CP3 looks old and washed up again? Who knows?

The only certainty is that even if we win the 'ship most of the clutchtards will find a way to blame Morey and Tillman for everything.

Here's the thing though: if people actually followed that team last year and understand, I guess, basketball/NBA then moving on from both Ariza and LMAM shouldn't have been second guessed at all, especially at the salary that Ariza got for this year.

What are the chances we sign him next season for the vet minimum? I'd do it.

we made the right decision by not retaining him. a healthy luc would've been enough to win game 6 or 7 in the WCF, but unfortunately he's never gonna be 100% healthy again.

I can't get over not retaining ariza though. yes $15M is a lot of money, but it was only for 1 season to bring back a should've-been championship team. yes we would've started the season way over the LT, but Morey spent enough picks and cash to get back under... and if he had to unload nene and shump to make room under the tax for ariza's money, he could've spent more picks to do so.

of course ideally we should've been willing to be over the LT this year since we were basically a championship team last year! but even if we valued being under the tax I would rather give up more picks and keep ariza this year so we could be ready to compete again. when you are that close, you go all in. you spend your picks, to spend the tax, you slightly overpay your core, and you go for it again!

Chances are good that a player with knee issuse and a history of dislocating the same shoulder wanting to sign a deal--any deal--is very high.

Chances are slim that a team with championship aspirations would want to sign a player with the ailments listed above.
