Seems about right, Kevin is a franchise-type player that hasn't quite proven his mettle yet in any significant situation---near-max is about what that kind of player should earn.

It wouldn't look so good if other contracts haven't just been bats*** insane though.

Geez, he's still so young. Barring a catastrophic injury he'll be set up for another max deal right as he's reached his prime.

Maybe he wants the chance to get out of there, in case the team doesn't pan out? (Or if he insists a trade to LA, NY, or Dallas.)

Gratz to Love on the extension. For someone who is putting up close to 25ppg and 15rpg, that is a pretty good deal for the Wolves.

After the extension, would he then become unrestricted?

hes so productive, you gotta give him money for that franchise. But with the new CBA, you can only give that one or two guys the max, he relaly isn't a number one option on a team, maybe a perfect part of a big 2 or 3. That said, hes so productive and if you don't pay him, someone will.

gotta believe that rubio is the reason love wants to stay in Minnesota. Rubio is going to be special and Love knows that.

Right now kahn is playing the whole, we're going to give you as much as anyone can offer you, take it or leave it, like memphis sort of did to gasol.

Reality is, until someone goes "ok, i'll take your qualifying offer and then walk", it's going to keep being done to everyone.

Morey does it too, but at the end of the day, he does it to roleplayers, would he do it to someone of Love's caliber? i have my doubts on that.

But we live in a world where stars can pick where they want to play. You don't want your 10 player unhappy with his situation. Every other team in the league would have given him the 5th year.

True. However Minnesota is unique in that they are the first team to be faced with the dilemma of who to give the supermax contract to. They had a very difficult time getting Rubio over here to play for them. Rubio did not want to go there. And they are worried more about him jumping in 4 years than they are about Love at present because Love's options are limited. He can sign a max offer sheet as a restricted free agent, which they can match. Or he can opt to pick up his option and become unrestricted in 2013. And they can trade him for a king's ranson if they can't get him to cooperate.

Minnesota is the first team to be faced with a possible choice of who they give the supermax contract to.

It's also interesting to note the number of 08ers which are not being given extensions. They're all going to hit the market together and all their teams will have the right to match an offer sheet. Looks like the owners have indeed toughened up and are playing hardball. That plus the realization of the limits of the new CBA is creating a more balanced salary environment.
