So Rockies, Dodgers, Giants, Angels, D-backs and Mariners players are allowed to use ganja but the Astros, aren't? Ridiculous. He should appeal and they should minimize the suspension.
I'm guessing that the mary jane ban is for all MLB franchises, regardless of what state they are located in. It's a private company; they're allowed to do that.
I figured that. In my opinion, they should change their policy to reflect the changing of the times and laws. How can you ethically suspend someone for doing something that is their legal right to do? If it is not in the mlb by-laws specifically and named (cannabis), then players may have grounds for an appeal. If it merely states that players can be suspended for the use of illegal drugs, then mlb maybe needs to rewrite it's by-laws.
Alcohol is legal and you can be fired or suspended any(every)where if you fail a test for alcohol. Granted that test is more conclusive in that the offender is likely presently under the influence but the newfound quasi-legality of herb is not a free pass to flunk employer issued drug tests for bud anywhere in the continental US... to my knowledge. Employers can still reprimand the offender with firing and/or suspension everywhere. /Stoners faint
While I think the punishment is harsh, I'm sure the league is very clear with the players about avoiding the stuff. I enjoy a little toke every now and then, but if I knew I was risking literally hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions, it'd be real easy to pass rather than puff. 21 year-olds will make mistakes. Hope he learns his and waits until he's out of baseball before toking it up again.
It is illegal in the United States. Period. Legalizing medical use and possession in a state, doesn't actually make it legal. mar1juana is specicically banned by the CBA. [rquoter]A. Drugs of Abuse Any and all drugs or substances included on Schedules I and II of the Code of Federal Regulations’ Schedule of Controlled Substances (“Schedule I or Schedule II”), as amended from time to time, shall be considered Drugs of Abuse covered by the Program; provided, however, that the drugs and substances defined as Stimulants in Section 2.C below shall be treated as Stimulants rather than as Drugs of Abuse where expressly indicated in the Program. The following substances and their analogs are covered by the Program as Drugs of Abuse, their Schedule classification notwithstanding: 1. Natural Cannabinoids (e.g., THC, Hashish and mar1juana) 2. Synthetic THC and Cannabimimetics (e.g., K2 and Spice) 3. Cocaine 4. LSD 5. Opiates (e.g., Oxycodone, Heroin, Codeine, and Morphine) 6. MDMA (Ecstasy) 7. GHB 8. Phencyclidine (PCP)[/rquoter] As long as it is a controlled substance as defined by Congress, it will be illegal in baseball.
Didn't used to be banned by MLB. A friend played in the majors for a couple of teams. He and a former NBA player I knew were 2 of the biggest pot heads I was ever associated with.
Man this is the first I heard of him doing it. There's no 1st time warning? Power trip almost as bad as Stern... almost
