John never took the time to learn the game. He just goes along with what they feed him to get along. Many fans don't realize vast majority of media: 1. Are not fans of your team. Brian T Smith doesn't care if your Texans win or lose, as long as they enough to create interesting stories for him to further his career. Same with all the Chronical media. The guys on the radio -- sorry, not Texans fans. 2. Don't know enough about the sport/sports they cover to make intelligent assessments. They're scoreboarders and stat pumpers. They couldn't tell you what the route concept was anymore than why the RT's technique is breaking down or why spin axis is important. There are some exceptions to this. Some, not all, former players understand their position as they played it. Lance Zierlein knows football, better as a college scout type than a pro personnel guy. But he's gone now. 3. Are in fear of losing their jobs. Media jobs are getting axed everywhere. Why pay 5 guys $100,000+ to just repeat what they're told when you can accomplish same with one guy at half the salary? And NFL teams control their media. If you cross Belichick, you get locked out of the facility (Albert Breer). Same in Denver with Elway, where it's embarrassing how much their media sucks up to #7. You go off script from Texan's message, you hear about it. 4. Write what Smith & Co. tells them to. McClain doesn't fact check. He doesn't do investigative reporting. Smith lies all the time, media doesn't care. Remember when every major national NFL media reported that Texans were shopping O'Brien to other teams? Rick told McClain and McClain tells you it's all nothing. Executives from teams across the country all simultaneously colluded in leaking false information to Rapoport and LaCanfora and Silver and Glazer and 9 others? Mass conspiracy? To what end? C'mon, man. These people aren't fans. They're just trying to do what Rick's doing, keep cashing checks.
