John Kelly: 'The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War'

    • White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Monday said, "the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War"
    • "I think we make a mistake ... when we take what is accepted as right and wrong, and go back 100, 200, 300 years or more and say, 'What Christopher Columbus did was wrong,'" Kelly said
    • The retired general's views echo those of his boss, President Donald Trump, who claimed in August that "both sides" were to blame after violence broke out during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia

Could someone speak to the compromise Kelly is referring to?

No one with any real studied knowledge of US history, no.

But this is silly: a diversion tactic from the massive indictment and guilty plea news, with Fox and the whitehouse collaborating.

    Plain as day.

Presumably allowing the south and whatever new territories chose to follow to remain slave states, either indefinitely or with some sort of slow phase out of slavery. What other compromise would have forestalled the US Civil War?

There were many compromises. They divided the country into slave and non-slave states and kept the balance for a long time with new states. What triggered the immediate act of the civil war was Lincoln's election - he had run on a platform to now allow slavery in these territories thus preventing new slave states from being created. He was not looking to ban slavery in existing states. Despite this, it prompted numerous southern states to secede. It was purely about the territories as southern states feared without slavery in the territories the slave states would lose power.

The lack of an ability to compromise led to World War II.
The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Cold War.

I suppose the other logical interpretation of the statement is that slavery is not as bad as Nazism or Communism.

But Nazism is kosher now, right? Right?

Boy are the children of this generation going to be so ****ing confused.

Hell, I'm confused. I grew up being taught that conservatives think multiculturalism, moral relativism and deconstructionism are all devil spawn.

OK, I guess multiculturalism is still the devil spawn.

It explains why they see the statues as their "history" that you can't erase.

Basically revisionist history happens all the time. Japan did it with WWII.

Pretty much this. Clear as day attempt to divert attention.

What’s sad about it is John Kelly was a once highly respected 4 star general and has now debased himself as a puppet for a drowning man in Trump. Painting himself as a racist nationalist at the behest of his boss. Maybe he always has been, but any doubt has now been settled. What man of dignity would throw away a lifetime of honor and patriotism to take a poltical hit on behalf of a hack like Trump?

I’m sure Trump will also use the NYC attack today to divert as well. Wouldn’t be shocked to hear him declare a national emergency and close our borders tomorrow over it just to get media attention. That guy is as predictable as they come.

Isn't John Kelly supposed to be one of the adults in the room?

Why would the Chief of Staff make such a comment? Either he's an idiot or (at best) it's a very clumsy attempt to distract.

There is no compromising about slavery - I get that he admires Lee, but this is just flat out stupid.

    Right on, Lou. Well done.

There was a "compromise" that had been in effect from 1776, when the USA first came into existence, until either the emancipation proclamation in 1863, or the passage of the 13th Amendment in 1865, depending on how you want to look at it.

Barring these events, both accomplished by Republicans with furious opposition from Democrats, the pre-existing compromise would have persisted. Presumably they could have modified that compromise into something other than a complete abolition of slavery. And during the presidential race of 1860, this was the key issue that was publicly discussed and debated during that race.

So, of course a "compromise" was not only possible, but prior to the 1860 election, it was surely regarded by the American people as a more likely outcome to this controversy than the full abolition that ultimately occurred.

Kelly's comments are historically accurate and anyone who suggests otherwise is either a liar or is ignorant about this period of our history. In the case of many in the Democrat left media who are trying to whip this up into a contentious issue, it is pretty clearly the former. Or to put it more concisely, what they are promoting is, yet again, fake news.

He’s right I guess. The lack of a willingness to continue compromising on slavery did cause the civil war. Interesting that kelly would have advised continuing compromising.

Are you saying that Kelly advised continuing the compromise? If so, do you have a link for that? Or did you just pull that out of your rear end?

Lincoln did offer to compromise with the South. Lincoln didn't start out as an abolitionist and he was willing to allow slavery to remain to preserve the Union. The compromise would've been that the institution wouldn't have spread any further. Once war broke out Lincoln also offered to compensate the South for the economic loss if they gave up slavery and surrendered. The Emancipation Proclamation was a compromise that it only freed slaves in states in the Confederacy and preserved slavery in slave states like Maryland that joined the Union.

If Kelly's statement is that the South failed to compromise then he is correct. Based on the rest of his comments he seems to be laying the lack of compromise on both sides.

This fits into a very troubling pattern from Kelly recently going to back to his press conference regarding Trump's talk with the Gold Star widow. For someone with his background his knowledge base and world view seem remarkably narrow. Further he seems unwilling to acknowledge that even when presented with facts that clearly contradict what he has stated. This might explain why the President trusts him so much as both seem to share in that.

Christopher Columbus was jailed in Spain for the horrific abuses he comitted on natives while governing Hispaniola among other offenses. We don't have to "go back" and judge him retroactively - his contemporaries were able to judge him just fine.

Kelly being very Trump-like by opening his mouth with less that a total grasp of the facts.
