Well my math doesn't add up. But I know 73 players have ever played in the ABA or NBA from UK since. With the 5 projected 1sts and 1 second this year, that would make 79. 14 of 79 in 3 years. No way.

Players scout coaches as much a the reverse is true. There are probably a lot of pro players making calls on his behalf, too. Also, college sports is like the NFL before the salary cap, revenue sharing or unions.

John Wall is the biggest mystery. He grows up right next to UNC and Duke, both schools with an equally rich college basketball history. Is Calipari really so good of a coach as to legally recruit not only Wall, but 4 other 1st round picks? It wouldn't even be an issue if any of these kids were any juniors or seniors. Last time I checked college is for education, not athletics. How does UK justify giving away so many scholarships to players we know will be millionaires in a year or two? Meanwhile, the states own high school basketball stars end up paying out the ass for college like the rest of us to attend UK, the states best educational school, or choosing a second rate school because its free.
Because the program bring money and attention to the university. The school profits from the basketball scholarships it gives. I'm sure the school also gives scholarships to women's sports, cross country, baseball, volleyball, academics, etc.

Remember the purpose of college is EDUCATION. Athletics, especially football, bring in lots of money for universities. Its a win-win because the athlete gets a free education and the school gets income to enhance education. There wouldn't be near as many academic scholarships without athletic scholarships. And remember, the overwhelming majority of student athletes will never become professional. Their choice of school should be for education. BUT UK is ranked 124th in education. Calipari is the highest paid coach in college basketball. He gets 10% of the whatever income UK basketball generates. That's double what Coach K gets at Duke, ranked 10th in education. He has seen Grant Hill, Battier, Laettner, Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, JJ Redick, Luol Deng, Corey Maggette all become NBA players and graduate from Duke. Hell he coaches the Olympic team. Calipari has incentive to recruit the best players. The better team he has, the better income will be. The players UK is getting are not there for the education. They are soon to be millionaires forced to attend college for at least 2 years now. Until then, they are poor college students. But if Calipari could provide financial incentive to attend UK, he would also increase his own pay and the recruits would never say a word. Who would turn down free money, especially at the ripe age of 18? So UK has 12 first round NBA draft picks in 3 years from a coach who has already tarnished both Memphis and UMass with scandals. Can that really be coincidence? It's not a secret college athletes who will turn professional are treated differently. But UK is making it blatantly obvious. Rich Pitino coached UK to two National Titles. He's also on the list of highest paid coaches, although he is at Louisville now. UK is annually ranked in the top 25. Its definitely a good basketball school. Don't forget Camby at UMass. The two players Calipari has been caught for cheating to acquire were Camby (took money from an agent) and Derrick Rose (had one of us take his SAT for him). Both times he bailed from the school before they got sanctioned, avoiding any hit on the way out. I can say that it does please me knowing that none of his employees/recruits have won an NBA championship or an NCAA championship. Sometimes there really is justice in the world. Nothing against Kentucky, but this time in the sun will come with a price, even if that price doesn't measure up to the original payoff. Ask Memphis and UMass how it feels post-Calipari.
Eh give the houston guy Pastner a chance! He's doing a fine job in his 3rd season as Memphis head coach and as the youngest head coach in major D-1 history... all after cleaning up Calipari's mess
yeah its gonna be nice to see kentucky have all their wins vacated in a few years because Calipari is as sleazy as they come and is the very definition of what is wrong with college basketball/recruiting.
Couldn't put it better. It's sad watching him pander to one-and-dones and give them free reign to play without the constraints of fuddy duddy things like "coaching"
