James Harden will soon pass Hakeem Olajuwon for the most 40 point games in franchise history

Yeah, and Michael Jordan would just be an Eric Gordon in this era too.

Interesting factoid, but it says more about basketball eras than it does ability. Half of Olajuwon's career was in the grind-it-out 90s where pace and scoring were low. Meanwhile, Harden gets to play in the no-hand-check era. Olajuwon would be smothered in triple-teams every time he got the ball without a whistle ever getting blown, while Harden marches to the charity stripe every other possession. And, Harden is chucking in a lot of 3s to run up the score while Olajuwon was plodding along with 2-point shots. There is more volatility in relying on 3s for your offensive game -- sometimes you're cold and shoot a forgettable game, but sometimes you're on fire, hit 8 of 10 from deep and have a 40 point game before you know it.

So I don't think it means anything. They're both great offensive players. Harden's game is particularly well-suited to today's game. He'd have done well in the 90s, but he's great today.

 

Number of 40 point games should not be a benchmark on how amazing a player is. Yawn.

 

I just wanna say how impressed I am with Harden this year. Yeah he started rocky. Yeah I criticize his TOs a lot. Yes his defense has slid back a little bit this season. But it's incredible what he does for us. Look at his MVP numbers last year and look what he is doing this year. Scoring up, assists up, FG% up, 3s % down a little bit but rebounding up, holding steady on steals and blocks. TO up 1/2 a TO per game but again, assists up and scoring up.

Dude is still just a beast. His #s are right there with his MVPesque year last year. It's just too bad this terrible season has many overlooking how great he has been this year. The D-Mo thing, the coaching thing. Lawson, Brewer, TJ...just a lot of crap circumstances but Harden has still beasted despite this. Please nobody come back at me on this post. Just let me give some props to Harden. We should appreciate him and build around him for many more years. Because duh.

Let's hope he can pass Hakeem on the 40+ points in playoff games. But he has a ways to go. 11 to 2. Hakeem is 6th all-time in the playoffs.

And note, Kobe and Shaq played over 80 more playoff games than Hakeem. Jabbar played over 100 more playoff games.

The folks that hate Harden the most will probably be the same people 10 years from now that will be b****ing about the good ole days when Harden led the Rockets to the playoffs his first 4 years in a row (hopefully if they get in this year) single handily on his back with a crappy supporting cast.

He's going to be in the history books for a long time with the Rockets up there with likes of Hakeem, Moses, Hayes, Murphy, McGrady, and Drexler for ALOT of different records.... EVEN if he declines, and only plays in Houston throughout this contract.

If you are going to have a crappy attitude about the Harden years then fine, but you better damn well get used to his name and likeness being a staple in the Houston Rockets hall of greats. He's going to be talked about in Houston Rockets history for years and years regardless of what happens this year and beyond.
