Is the CP3 contract already a negative contract?

If we were to try to trade CP3 for a Blake Griffin or Aaron Gordon caliber player, or even a first round lottery draft pick today, would we be able to get it?

If we wanted to get rid of his contract today, would we get assets or have to give assets to a team that’s willing to take bom

I ask because signing him was an all-in move. We know our future will be bleak with him tying all of that cap space, but since we were so close last year, we did it.

It looks like we’re not winning it all, so should we scratch that plan, trade CP, and try to build around harden and capela?

    It's a negative.

Hes the 2nd highest paid player in the league (behind Curry) but is currently playing like one of the worst NBA starting PGs in the league. At this point, he's making Lins contract look valuable.

    I absolutely hate that contract.

CP3 is no longer a superstar talent in this league and a cpl of good games won't change that.

This is a young man's game & father time has claimed another victim in CP3.

Let him heal. He will be allright. But 40 is just too much.

A lot of knee-jerk overreactions here. CP3 is not a young kid anymore, so he'll need time to get going. You don't want him to reach his peak shape 10 games into the season. He'll get better and better.

That being said... That contract is still a bit iffy.

First of all, he was recently injured. Secondly, this could just be an early shooting slump. Yes, the contract will be a negative in about 2-3 years but he can still ball today. The move to let Ariza leave was defensible, but allowing Luc to leave over $4 million is unforgivable. Money shouldn’t have been dying for Melo. He should have focused on keeping as much of the team intact as he could.
It’s clear now that Melo is washed and inconsistent.

    It's a fine contract for a top 10 player.

He is having a bad start and his elbow is hurt apparently. Still, he is not going to be a top 10 player anymore. He could put on an MVP performance in a single series or in several games in the playoffs, but he is not going to be an overall top 10 player anymore.

More importantly, he should have taken a pay cut. You want to beat the Warriors, you want to win it all, bla bla. How bad? The Warriors want to win it so bad they shuffle pay cuts. Everyone will claim they want a ring and that they don't have to take a pay cut, but the players who take pay cuts for wins, those guys want it more. It bothered me that he didn't take a significant cut.

These guys are smart enough to sit around and figure out that even if our main guys DID take pay cuts, we would not be guaranteed a title. The opponent is taking pay cuts and has amassed the greatest amount of talent on a single team possibly ever. That means you take a pay cut, you come to the season ready, you don't play at a snail's pace and you work harder than everyone else.

We can still win despite this. But it didn't have to be this much more difficult.

I have been impressed with his speed early on. This is an overreaction. That man can shoot, he is just struggling.

I understand that this new contract is an agreament that come from when we trade for him.
and that brought us to the western finals

Something with his elbow or wrist. I think both. Maybe some someone can post some more information about it.

It was a negative the moment Morey gave it to him.

No aging 33 yo should be getting paid 40mil/year, unless he's not injury prone like Lebron.

A conclusion cannot yet be reached until the end of this season or playoffs if we even make it.
