after making the barkley top 20 thread, i figured i'd see what everyone thinks of garnett's place on the all-time list. much like barkley, he was always thought of as a great player who couldn't win a title. he did eventually get the title but it's never talked about as the typical "alpha dog" title that most greats are evaluated by. like barkley, i would have him just inside the top 20, though i could probably be convinced otherwise.

for reference, barkley's weighted average in the other poll was 24.8.

    relevant garnett information:

made 2 finals and won 1 title with the boston celtics.

Garnett was the alpha dog on that Celtics title team.

They made the Finals again and were an Artest 3 from winning another title. Garnett is a top 20-25 player for sure. Defensively you will be hard pressed to find a better power forward and he at one point could guard 4 positions.

7th all-time in win shares, 32nd in playoff win shares, 30th in win shares/48, 20th in playoffs win shares/48...

    I'd say he's in the 26-30 range.

As a player perspective, not just a generalized winning perspective, he could do a ton of things on the court from defensively changing a game to offensively changing a game. I would say he is a top 20 player. The Big Ticket is a legend.

In his prime probably the closest I have ever seen a defender who could guard all 5 positions

    His prime year:

    24.2 PPG, 14 REB, 5 AST, 1.5 STL, 2.2 BLK

50% from the field, 79% from the line.

    GOLD.

I remember with the timberwolves he was remembered for not being able to get out of the first and with celtics he is remembered for being the leader on a all time great team. just proves what contexts means

    What.

MVP. DPOY. The best player on a championship team. 15 time All Star. 9 Time All NBA. One of the greatest defensive players to ever play the game.

My perspective? He's not that much worse than Kobe, and there's utterly no debate in my mind that he's far better than Barkley. As for that "alpha dog" crap,do people seriously not realize just how awful those Timberwolves teams were? Aside from 2004, they weren't any better than the stuff Kobe had around him from 2005 to 2007, and he couldn't get out of the first round either.

    Better than him(no order):

    KAJ
    MJ
    Russell
    Magic
    Bird
    Duncan
    Kobe
    Wilt
    Shaq
    Hakeem
    Oscar
    LeBron

And maybe West, Wade and Robinson.
