He's still gonna stay pad his way til the end of the season just to make sure he averages his triple double... Also notice he didn't take any 3pt shot tonight lol.
i found this stat crazy......Westbrook has not set 1 screen all season that has led to a score also has only contested 250 shots all season
Not to diss Westbrook's perfect Triple-Double but zero 3 point shot attempt (his first time in 83 games) looks interesting to me as well.
He only played 28 minutes. Took only 6 shots. Sounds like somewhat intentional not to spoil the perfect shooting. I wonder how many of those 6 shots were layups. It's a blowout, so it's understandable that they would do something crazy just for the stats. But still, so unnatural. If someone was to tell you before the game that Westbrook was going to take only 6 shots, would you not just laugh?
He broke a record by not missing a FG and FT but still getting a triple double? The question is did he play the game to break this record because it kind of is implied he did or did it just come naturally? If the thing about his teammates ensuring he gets enough rebounds is true, then that implies there is a concerted OKC team policy to get Westbrook the MVP. This versus it just being based on natural play and whatever happens...happens. I honestly don't know what to think any more. I feel like I'm biased because I'm a Rockets fan. It's hard to be objective. We're basically saying Westbrook's stats are cheaper than Harden's stats because of how WB gets some of them (specifically, DRE \rebounds)...but a stat is a stat. They don't come with asterisks. But, if they take team record into account and best bounceback record from last season, then the choice is pretty clear and a lame perfect shooting night on limited shots for a triple double shouldn't change anything.
nevermind, I found it on the NBA's website. I didn't know they tracked those stats, pretty cool. Link here for anyone that wants to look: http://stats.nba.com/players/hustle/#!?Season=2016-17&SeasonType=Regular Season&PerMode=Totals&sort=SCREEN_ASSISTS&dir=1&PlayerPosition=G&CF=MIN*G*1000 So I did look into it a bit more, and this is truly amazing. Russell Westbrook is the only Guard in the NBA with 1000+ minutes and ZERO screen assists. He never sets them for his teammates, so no wonder why they aren't shooting that well. Some of the guys near the top are Curry (98) and Iggy (52), who we know play in a team-ball system that sets picks for eachother. Giannis and Delly are 2 and 3, which is interesting. Beverley and Harden are 6 and 7 with 40 each this season. We see the Rockets use this a lot, where Harden will hand off the ball to Gordon or whoever as he wraps around and gets separation from his defender. You're right about the 250 contested shots as well. Russ is so far down the list of guards, I don't even want to count what number he is (near 90th). In the few games I have watched of OKC, I did notice that there were many times he would leave his man to move closer to the rim so he could rebound. It generally wasn't for help defense, it was just getting into position. Sometimes the ball would swing to his open man at the 3pt line, and he would let them shoot, then go for the rebound. It's pretty funny to see, as it's clear what his goal is, but kind of sad at the same time. I'm guessing that's why his contested shots are so low, he's not close enough to the player to even try.
Westbrook hasn't steadily gone from a flawed but gifted defender as a rookie, all the way down to a horrible defender. He is arguably the worst defensive starting point guard in the NBA. He simply does not attempt to defend players. Now, that shouldn't be a surprise because he is exerting some much energy on the offensive side of the court. What is surprising is that no one in the media seems to want to point it out.
The shittiest part about all of this is that I actually LIKE Westbrook. He was probably my favorite player outside of the Rockets going into this season. And then the media, like they always do, completely ruined a good thing and shoved his stat-padding down our throats while pish-poshing everything Harden did. Now I find myself actively rooting against a player I love, and it absolutely sucks.
I think Westbrick might be on to something. The best thing he can do for his team is to never shoot 3's and take as few other shots as possible per game. Him only taking 6 shots is scary if he keeps it up.
There is absolutely zero possibility that he keeps this up for the rest of the season, and into the playoffs. It's just not in him. This is the same guy that took like 40 shots in a game less than a month ago. Now all of a sudden he's going to be ok taking just 6?? Not going to happen.
Someone must have told WB that he currently has the worst FG% for any MVP since Bob Cousy in 1957. His 6-6 game put him in a tie with Iverson for 2nd worst ever. I wouldn't have thought Westbrick had it in him to go even one game with only 6 shots and be smart enough to have none of them from 3. Maybe he's realizing that his shooting is OKC's greatest weakness.....LOL just kidding, I know he'll go back to being the chucker he's always been.
Spoiler Super long reddit post, but very informative. I always love when people say Harden's stats are inflated because of D'Antoni but Westbrook's aren't.
Should we consider what color shoes or what day of the week it was when a triple double has occurred?
