The truth is nothing has helped make America the great country it is today as much as immigration has. I agree that we need to control illegal immigration and instead expand legal immigration but be smart and highly selective about it. There is no doubt that more than ever before America is in a real need for a new class of energetic and innovative thinkers, we need to do targeted immigration reforms, not the whole dumb random lottery thing for green cards. One obvious target is the thousands of graduate students already here studying in high need fields like engineering and hard sciences.

I agree with every word. Immigration is, in and of itself, uniquely American. The entire country is made up of people who immigrated, save the Native Americans.

They immigrated about 10,000 BC across a Bering Strait land bridge.

Of course, the downside of your argument is that some of them may become a conservative! But, its inevitable that you get a few "bad seeds." ;)

Don't forget that the English have been successful in large part due to the Angles and Saxons who emigrated from continental Europe. And, Europe in its turn is made up in large part from immigrants from southern Asia. And, pretty much no one would be anywhere if it weren't for the hominids leaving Africa o so many years ago.

I don't mind if MANY of them become conservative as long as they are thinking, reasonable conservatives like William F. Buckley. THERE was a great example of a conservative.

    Glenn Beck doesn't even compare.

Of course immigrants are the driving force. US is getting LeBron James of sciences from countries like China and India w/o paying anything.
And face it no Americans want to do some of the labor work immigrants do.

Not to be a pedant, but following that logic, then, as a "cauc" whose family has been here for several hundred years don't I at some point become a native, too? Or is it only Siberians who are allowed that state change from immigrant to native in the new world?

What, exactly, are the rules for the transition?

Maybe we can coin some phrase to describe the way that immigration has influenced our country.

What about calling America the "Melting Pot"?

Man, if this reference catches on I could get rich.

Don't forget the cream of the Mexican working class with their tremendous work ethic and physical endurance. We need lots of labor and their kids who inherit their work ethic will, as the Irish and other poor immigrants groups before, rise in society if we can maintain upward mobility through such institutions as a humane immigration law, labor unions, wage and hour laws, heavily state supported universities, universal heath care etc.

You know, I was thinking about this argument the other day, about how these Mexican immigrants would come in and create a new poor class and depress incomes and lead to all kinds of ills and repercussions for the larger society. Then, I remembered San Antonio and the huge population of 2nd and 3rd generation Mexicans in that city who are well-entrenched into the American landscape, their kids act about as 'American' as you will ever see. They, too, follow the typical crap the 'American' (code for WASPs) kids follow from Britney Spears to Tiger Woods. They seem to have blended or melted into society just fine, I would dare even say no less so than the Irish or Polish immigrants have in the many large metro areas where they are concentrated, kind of like ethnic Mexicans in San Antonio. So I guess if San Antonio is what the future might look like in many American towns, then things will be fine.

This is really why I no longer see fear-mongering about the changing face or demographics of America the same way I used to, especially when it is ENTIRELY (and I mean pretty much ENTIRELY) being promoted by individuals of pretty much the same mold, this is why it is hard for me to these views as being representative of anything other than right wing White America panicking at the horror of being, one day in the not so distant future I am sure, a minority, or at least one of just many ethnic clusters.

I still have a big problem with illegal immigration from the south (or from anywhere, really) because it circumvents immigration laws that already exist, and gives an unfair advantage in terms of access to those who can cross by land than other countries and ethnic groups, some of whom I am sure are quite a bit more deserving. The fact is the more illegal immigration that exists, the more than hinders and impacts legal immigration to the U.S.A.

Yeah but that is not accurate though, I am sorry but it just aint. It is a nice image that we are trying to promote but in reality we are still quite a bit of distance away from becoming a true "Melting Pot"

It is a nice self-portrait though, I can appreciate the sentiment, but it just aint true.

You could say that the label 'natives' is applicable a cultural group that did not displace (by force?) another cultural group in the specified region.
