I see Morey as being an options man which leads many to see him as a man without direction. To me, Morey has a clear view on the destination, a championship. He sees many paths to get there. Each path requires different rare resources. Morey does not want to sacrifice the ability to get these rare resources by making a bad decision. It seems since the Yao and McGrady era ended, Morey has constantly been in there scrapping for a star.

Morey tried to trade for Howard knowing that the big markets would be tapped out on salary. Out of all the negativity Howard and his handlers got for how they handled Howard's impending free agency, it worked out best for him even if it was at the loss of the Rockets. Morey did not make a deal that would have left the Rockets with Howard and nothing left. Looking at the Harden deal, it seems Morey was willing to give a lot for a star. It still amazes me that Howard is not a Rocket after seeing what Orlando got for Howard. In all seriousness, Orlando should have Harden, plenty of cap space the next two offseasons, and their own picks.

I think Harden is only Rocket that is completely in the Rockets plan. It would take a Lebron, Durant level guy to get him from the Rockets.

I see Lin and Asik as the next two big pieces for the Rockets in Morey's plan. These guys can be acquired for the right deal.

Parsons, Jones, and Motiejunas are also in the long term plans, but are also likely to be desired by other teams. I see Jones and Motiejunas as only one being a Rocket long term.

PPat, Morris are guys that could easily fit long term as a backup. With Asik as a lock (at least as a backup), I see the Rockets wanting a stretch four in the worse way. Both these guys are decent at it, but are probably not what Rockets want long term as a starter. These guys could easily be used to increase value of a Rockets offer or to just match a salary.

White.. after seeing difficulties Lin and Harden are having playing together, even if White was playing for RGV...he would be on his way out. He has a lot of talent that I wish he would decide to use in the valley.

Delfino...I think Rockets would like to keep him for another season or two just as he knows positioning.

Smith, Machado..think Rockets will keep for at least a couple of seasons. Good cheap contracts. Allows team to have higher paid players on team.

Rest of the team really isn't in plans, but could become more useful depending on trades.

You understand that until Yao retired, Morey was instructed to build around Yao. He was a win now type of player and Morey got pieces to fit around him. If Yao would have stayed healthy, who knows what would of happened. Les would never let him trade Yao because he was/is just too valuable to the franchise. And then he was not allowed to tank. I think he has done a masterful job of keeping this team competitive with the amount of bad fortune that has doomed this organization since the Yao/Tracy era.

I would read this whole thread but I am sure that people have already stated the obvious flaws in the original post... Look at it this way OP... At least he's doing better than half the league... IMHO better than 3/4s! He's dealt with the major Rox issues since he started, but no GM is a miracle worker... Even the Heat had down years

And then the team might not have been blown up and we probably would not have James Harden.

Unless Morey can prove that he can build a playoff team, he is not a qualified GM. I am not sure any GM in the category of great ever have their team short of playoffs 3 years in a row, if there is any, I think that would be rare case.

Remember, there is only few teams in the last 10 years that did not have playoffs in 3 years in a row, none of those GMs are regarded as great GM as MOF claimed on Morey.

Even you can argue that Morey has the team wining 50% each season, you can not ignore the fact that more than half of the teams would makes the playoffs and Rockets is not one of them in the last a few years.

You'd probably still be cheering for New York right now and would have never signed up here.

The same thing is being said of nearly half the GMs in the NBA by the fans - that is they should be fired. There are always good deals and bad deals in any trade scenario. The key to success as a GM is avoiding really bad contracts and making moves to correct a problem fast when they know they've made a bad move. Even in Toronto where Colangelo was once awarded as NBA exec of the year, they are now clamoring for his departure. Can't please all the fans all the time as they say.
