If the NBA held a one-on-one tourney, which 8 players should be invited?

Something I'd like to see more than slam dunks or skills contests or 2-ball at the all-star game would be a one-one-one contest.

Tell me who should get the invitation, a top 8.

    me first, with seedings:

    1) Garnett (hard to stop down low, and handle to get it there)
    2) Tracy McGrady
    3) Kobe
    4) Ron Artest (how would you like HIM guarding you one-on-one!)
    5) LeBron
    6) Iverson (too small to win it though)
    7) Pierce
    8) Nowitski (probably can't defend well enough to win it)

others to consider: Carmelo, Wade, Tim Duncan, Baron Davis, Steve Francis, Rashard Lewis, Latrell Spreewell...

Ron Artest? Ask D'Wayne Wade and Richard Hamilton how overrated of a defender he is.

Shaq might have a chance. Anyone who can post up is pretty much unstoppable tho.

    Don't get him started!

IIRC, this was something that was supposed to happen in 1996. Taco Bell was sponsoring a Dream vs Shaq tourney, though Dream pulled out because of injury (back, I think). There were going to be a couple of undercard matches too: Kenny Anderson was to be in one of them, I'm pretty sure. I'd have to divide these up a little, since no one would want to see KG humiliate a little guy.

    My list:
    Heavyweight Bout: KG vs Duncan
    Middleweight Bout: T-Mac vs Kobe
    Lightweight Bout: Iverson vs Marbury
    Undercards:
    Lebron vs Melo
    Francis vs Baron Davis

I'm not sure I'd like to see Shaq-Yao, considering how brutally one-sided it would be.....

Before MacBeth posts this, I'll get in.

The 2000 US Olympic team had a one-on-one tournament in training, and apparently Vince dominated everyone.

I thought they said it was KG that dominated everyone else.

Yeah that's what I heard too. I wonder who are his opponents he knocked out in that tourney and the scores for those games.

Hands down Shaq will crush everyone. Nothing beats power in a 1 on 1 game. He's got great handles for his size too. There should be different position divisions to make it more fair on the smaller guys.

Somebody like a Nick Van Excel or a Sam Cassell type of game would be great 1 on 1.

    WoW!!!

    What a great idea!!!

Unfortunately, I dont think many vets would partake, but I'd think the rookies/sophmores would.

Any borderline star in the NBA (that is not "defensive specialist, e.g. Ben Wallace) is unstoppable 1-on-1. That's why the ISO was so popular in the 90s until the illegal defense rule was abolished. I don't see any meaning in such a contest.

If i remember correctly, the one on one tournament during the 2000 olympics was a first point wins contest. Basically, Vince was able to score one basket on everyone without anyone scoring on him.

Here's some matchups I've always wanted to see:

Francis vs. Marbury (They've had some verbal beef in the past. No idea who would win, but Francis' jumping advantage would definitely help him)

KG vs. Duncan (I think KG would win because he has so much of a speed advantage, and is overall more athletic than Duncan)

Kobe vs. T-Mac (obviously this would be heated. I actually would say Kobe would win this one. His Jumper just seems more accurate)

LeBron vs. Carter (a HEALTHY Carter btw...I think Carter from a few years ago could beat LBJ. Carter has a better jumper and to me was just overall quicker)

Actually that wasn't the case... it was up to 14 or 15 points.. something like that... In the finals.. it was VC vs KG and VC beat him 14-7... KG's comments were that VC was on another level compared to everyone else there...

i doubt kobe, tmac,kg or any topnotch stars will do it because it may be damaging if they lose. if i ran the contest i would do a swingman tourney...

If you dont have good handles one on one I dont think you can hang.. the guy guarding you if quick enough can keep swiping the ball..

A game like this would be more fun with SG/Sf types than anyone else.

    My ideal matchups would be.

Tmac vs. Kobe (that would be a marquee matchup)
Francis vs. Marbury (would be pretty exciting to watch)
KGarnett vs. JOneil (both can handle the ball for their size)
    VCarter vs. PPierce?

I tried to find interesting matchups.

most players are unstoppable one on one unless overmatched but at least these type of matchups make sense.
