Did any one notice the ‘galleryfurniture.com’ plastered on the scorers table in the renderings of the new arena rockets arena?

Am I the only one who is sick of galleryfurniture and mattress mac?

He may give money to donations ( I am sure there is a tax incentive/break for these ‘charity donations’) but he can never do it as a concerned citizen that cares….I will nevr believe that...I see through that guy and simply think the guy is out there to promote his stupid store.. I mean it always has to be something to do with freaking gallery furniture and I always hear people saying ‘what a great guy.. to do this or to do that’ and nobody seems to take notice to the enormous publicity that he receives from having his freaking label plastered everywhere…is he really out to help the rockets or his company? does he really care about jack sh*t besides galleryfurniture? no of course not...he has conned enough here in Houston to actually make people believe that he cares…the only thing he cares about is cash…

I am sorry I just think the guy is low class and takes every opportunity to promote his company..i can understand that from a business perspective but don’t try and act like you are some civic minded philanthropist all about ‘the people’…that’s complete b*llsh*t…he is into self promotion and nothing more…. I for one and sick of his style and it reeks of ulterior motives just like everything else that man does….it comes across as deceitful and slimy…

That brings me to my other point about this guy…I mean have you heard the commercials? (I am sure you have its impossible not to)

That guy will use any holiday..event non event or whatever to have a “sale” what exactly does he mean by ‘sale’ then? am I supposed to jump in my car and head straight to tidwell and parker? A sale is a sale not a freaking daily deal..he has desensitized the word of its meaning… I mean I was driving in my car the other day and I heard the radio and of course you guessed it freaking mattress mac comes on..i am sitting there thinking well its September and labor day was a while ago really the next holiday would be I don’t know Halloween I guess so I wondered what bullsh*t sale he would have…of course mac is one step ahead of me and he announced the “september to remember sale” uuummmm okay? What a joke…he went on to say that it would be the ‘biggest’ and ‘best’ sale ohh yeah ‘ever’ might I add…so what next then the ‘pre Halloween sale’ I am sure mac has that covered… the ‘biggest’ would mean that it would have to be the ‘biggest’ right? Well I can guarantee the next sale will not be any bigger and will not be the best either….because neither is the one now or the one before because there is no such thing as a ‘sale’ and its all hype and smoke and mirrors..

Do you see where I am coming from? The guy is a slime bag and he really makes me sick…he works on deceit and I think he takes it to levels that are downright embarrassing… his association with the rockets is making me sick but I am not going to let a freaking dork with a SCARY grill take away from my support of the rockets…that being said does anyone else agree that this guy completely sucks?

For those of you not in Houston consider yourselves lucky you don’t have to listen to this galleryfurniture diarrhea on a daily basis….

I remember M Mac from when I lived in Houston. I can certainly see where you're coming from. But doesn't he do quite a bit of community service? I could be pulling that one out of my a$$.

Yeah, for real man. I guess that's one good thing about living in Austin, is that I don't have to hear "Save You Money" fifty times a day.

I remember Mac from when he first opened his store back in 1984 when he came on UWF wrestling with Paul Bosch. I thought he was cool then. I remember him and Ted Dibiase getting into an "argument". I can't believe he got so huge.

Now for the Cliff Notes version of Sirhangover's post...

    "Gallery Furniture sucks"

Low Class?? Slime bag?? Scary grill?? Geez, why don't you insult his wife while you're at it? I've read lots of pointless rants in my time, and some of them were even funny, but to pull out so many personal insults and pointless accusations is just...well, I'd say low class is a good way to describe it...

I don't think Mac ever claimed to be a philanthropist, just a guy running a furniture store. Last time I checked (I think he got $80 million just from the 1996 Olympics alone), he was doing a pretty damn good job...

I'm sure Mac is laughing all the way to the bank...

He does alot of community service here in Houston, but he certainly is obnoxious. And if you want to see him at his worst, check him out in the Jockey Club at Sam Houston Racetrack after a few cocktails!

by the way this thread may not last very long as I know that there is a relationship between clutch city and gallery furniture...

I am in no way attacking clutch city or the rockets org. i am simply calling it how i see it with mac...i feel i am entitled to say what i have said about galleryfurniture...

again i want to say that yes he does do community service work but his intentions are pretty obviously directed toward the promotion of his store...

if i were to do community service it would be for 2 reasons because i got arrested or because i wanted to...i feel his community service is a cheap promotion of his company and makes him look like he is a great community guy...whatever... the community service publicity is just for business purposes and i feel it demeans the cause or charity itself when the person doesnt do it because he wants to but because it promotes his business....

ohh yeah thanks for bottom lining it for us atrane I appreciate you keen sense of journalism... you could have been a little more original in trying to attack my post..come on man try a little harder.. you are too busy tuning the flowmasters on your 86 i-roc... swigging back a keystone on your 'classy' porno movie gallery furniture couch to recognize classy or not...i am not too worried about you...you can take the person out of the trailer park but you cant take the...nevermind...

Turbo, we don't hear "save you money" alot in Austin, but those idiots at TExas discount furniture use that exact slogan. Come to think of it, alot of discount furniture stores use that.

Actually, I think everyone in the BIG 12 gets to hear his crap. On the Red Raider radio broadcasts, GalleryFurniture.com gets a few ads in the Pre & Post game shows. Since the GalleryFurniture.com Bowl has a BIG 12 tie-in, I think everyone in the BIG 12 has to run his spots.

As much as you may hate or love Mac, one thing is for sure. His voice and slogan is engrained in any Houstonian's head.

"Come to Six-thousand Six I-45 North between Tidwell and General Parker. {slogan for the day}. GALLERY FURNITURE WILL-- SAVE- YOU- MONEY!!!!! (Mac Jumping up & down)."

SirHangover-- I don't think CC.net has a working relationship w/ Mac. From what I remember, Mac was going to help SOR w/ some shirts and bumper stickers this summer, but it fell through.

So I'm assuming you're looking forward to Houston's new college football bowl game this year? (Galleryfurniture.com Bowl) [IMG]

When you say "clutch city," I assume you mean Houston and not ClutchCity.net. Mac is not affiliated with this site at all.

I've talked to him a few times and I found him to be a decent guy who is an outstanding businessman. He is a shameless self-promoter but that is part of what makes him successful.

This falls under that category of "whatever you do is good" for me. I don't care if the guy makes money off of his donations to charity. The fact is that the guy does give money and that makes a difference. Who cares if he benefits from it or not. I guarantee that you won't hear the charity complaining.

Do you think that the people who receive his help feel that it was a tainted gesture? It doesn't really matter what you or I think because we are not the ones in need.

Of course he will promote his business. That's what he does. He is a businessman after all. He only has about 5% of the furniture market in this city so constant promotion is crucial to his survival. That and those outrageous finance charges!

The majority of team owners and players do their charity work to promote their image. Do you think all those sick kids, battered wives, and a/c-less elderly folks care whether or not the gestures were genuine or not?

The fact is that at least Mac actually does more than is necessary. His support for local sports is tremendous. Who cares if his ads show up at every game or on TV. Don't go buy his stuff if you don't like it.

Well, I know you didn't do that community service because you wanted to so...

His whole gimmick was taken from an old east coast guy that called himself Crazy Eddie. Since then guys like Cal Worthington, Mattress Mac and thousands of others have adopted the "loony toon" strategy of marketing.

Anyway, hey hangover, I guess you won't be buying any of your furniture from Gallery for your new apartment?

And if one Matress Mac isn't enough we've got his understudy, his apprentice if you will.Rest easy knowing that long after Mac is gone we'll still have this guy...."OHHHH AND THAT'S A FACT,OHHHH AND THAT'S A FACT" all this while wielding a chainsaw or some other power tool!No I think it's safe to say Houston were in no shortage of loony furniture salesman.

    One interesting stat about volunteering:

Houston represents about 1% of the population of the US but over 11% of the volunteer hours in the country.

I'm with Jeff on this. I just can't see what your real problem is, hangover.

Who cares what his motivations are for donating money. Unfortuantely there is people in a lot more powerful position than Mattress Mac who do apparent charitable work for even worse reasons, like political gain/re-election

The guy is a marketing machine and seems to run a very successful business. Sure, he's annoying but, thats just part of the game.

Besides, he's a rockets fan and that counts a lot for me [IMG] I'll never forget the playoffs a couple of years back when we played Utah in the first round. Mac was upset that the Rockets got a hostile reception in Utah and we were too nice over here, so he held a comp fore the loudest, nastiest rockets fans, and gave all the winners seats adjacent to the Utah bench.

And another thing, I will never forgive him for tramatizing me during my early years with the little jingle that had his phone number. I will never forget the business number. (690-5570)

P.S. Thankfully I don't watch much TV up here in Austin, so I am missing the much repeated slogan.

HAHAHA!! REDNECK smack?? Is that the best you have, calling me a redneck?? And I'M unoriginal?? I guess this is what you get when you combine a Clone with a sixer of Tequiza...

Damn, son, if I wanted to be "unoriginal", I would have called you out on your pathetic grammar. Why don't you go somewhere and get arrested so you can do some community service. When I'm driving down the freeway, I'll be sure to toss a soda can your way to make sure you properly pay your debt to society...

I kind of like the guy...I mean, his act is so ridiculous that you have to see that he is a marketing genius. I once took a picture with him at a little track and field event at UH and he was really friendly. However, I have been wondering one thing since I went to his store...there was some golden chair or something that had something written in it like "Church of Scientology" or so...if I remember correctly - now I am in no way making any statement about this, I am just wondering, can anyone confirm that there is any affiliation between the guy and that organization?
