How to Recover Excel 2003 files opened in office 2007?

A friend of mine opened her excel file which she made in excel 2003 and then wanted to change something so she used the campus computer (loaded with office 2007 on vista). This corrupted her file and now she can't open it with any version.

Is there any kind of free program out there that can fix this corrupted file? She spent about 15 hours working on the data analysis in that file and now she is screwed. I found a program with a free trial, but only files 15kb or smaller can be fixed.

Any help will be much appreciated.
