Let me restate that. I came up with the application of that phrase to this situation myself. The originator of that phrase is older than I am (and I'm an old fart) and MUCH more creative than I.
Since that rumor surfaced, the assistant pool $ number came out. Holgorsen has some pretty good money to work with. Somebody better/better aligned than Gibbs might want it. Plans may be evolving. I’d be ok with Gibbs, but just ok. I’d appreciate it if a few more feelers were put out first.
Another interesting thing mentioned here is that they lost $3 million in season ticket sales over the last two years. Pezman is nice in not blaming Applewhite, but he seemed to do so little to promote the program. Zero juice from the start.
I thought that might be a reason he got fired even if no one will admit it. I've seen Holgorsen out promoting the program more in his first week on the job than Opie did in 2yrs. This isn't a blue blood program that 70,000 will show up no matter what the results are there is competition in Houston for entertainment dollars so you have to sell the program here.
I'm a good example of this. Few years back I noted what a great job Khator was doing university wide. I believe she made my old degree more valuable and decided to help support her actions. Didn't have much money to donate, but figured as a sports fan I could get off my ass and go to a few games to help the cause. I live in Austin, so it is a bit of an effort, but from/have friends in Houston so a $15 or $25 ticket to Robertson seemed a good deal. Time goes by, I'm doing better and I upgrade to season tickets. I'm OK with a losing record but I have a hard time with poorly played ball. Bad tackling, non-existant downfield blocking, and way to many self inflicted off-sides blended with unimaginative play calling and crappy defense led to too many unhappy drives home. Last year my buddy reminded me I am here to support the school and convinced me to re up. Even before Army, I'm not renewing. Easy decision. Well, now I'm renewing.
I haven't seen anything from Berman or Duarte yet but: https://www-vivathematadors-com.cdn...-texas-tech-red-raiders-cougars-coaching-hire
Mark Berman reported interviews wound up today. I think we will get an official release in the next few days.
If Carrier is on board, perhaps they’ve worked out the number for the D coordinator. Cool to have him back, I remember watching him break the yardage record.
Houston Football Head Coach Dana Holgorsen named the first six members of his inaugural Houston staff Friday. Doug Belk (Co-Defensive Coordinator & Cornerbacks), Marquel Blackwell (Co-Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks), Blake Gideon (Safeties & Special Teams) and Shannon Dawson (Offensive Assistant Coach), Ryan Dorchester (Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations) and Daikiel Shorts Jr. (Director of Player Development)
Joseph DuarteVerified account @Joseph_Duarte 3m3 minutes ago Houston coach Dana Holgorsen announces these hires to his 10-member coaching staff: • Marquel Blackwell (co-OC/QBs) • Shannon Dawson (offensive assistant coach) • Doug Belk (co-DC/CBs) • Blake Gideon (safeties, ST coordinator
Too bad on David Gibbs returning and now appears not returning. I guess DeRuyter is OK (if they can get him).
Joseph DuarteVerified account @Joseph_Duarte 21h21 hours ago Can confirm FootballScoop report that Cal defensive coordinator Tim Deruyter is under consideration for same job at Houston. Have also been hearing Oklahoma assistant defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks is also being looked at for job on defensive staff. Can't say I know any of these guys. I like they are power five, but I don't think of Cal or OK as being defensive juggernauts. I really liked Gibbs when he was with us, but he doesn't seem particularly highley regarded.
Tim Deruyter's name carries weight. No idea about Cooks, but if you're plucking people off elite P5 coaching trees, you're probably doing something right. GO TILMAN GO! SALTGRASS FOR LIFE!
This is our biggest challenge. Turning a bad defense around. Hoping it is just a function of having the right coach instead of lack of talent. Even with Ed Oliver in there it seemed that they never put consistent pressure defensively on the opposing team. As much as I enjoy watching our offense put 50 on someone it is equally demoralizing watching a team like Army go through our defense like crap through a goose.
