Wikipedia says he was the TE coach for the Falcons, not the OL coach.

Yep. That was one of the main reasons he got hired over Todd Orlando + other candidates.

Nick Saban, Mack Brown, and others actually went out of their way to call UH and personally recommend him.

Bryson Smith (the Tyler John Tyler QB) immediately committed once the news came out that Applewhite was hired, and Ed Oliver even tweeted his approval.

However, I feel that he's going to be another Tony Levine (strong recruiter, poor game manager) because of his horrid play calling. I could be wrong though. He has a young OC in Brian Johnson calling the plays this time.. but a lot has to be proven first.
We're going from a dual-threat QB in Greg Ward, Jr. to a pocket passer in Kyle Allen (presumably the starter), and Mark D'Onofrio was the mastermind behind one of the worst defenses in the NCAA this past season (even though Todd Orlando personally recommended him and he vows to keep the defense the same).

Tom Herman's staff (that he essentially took over with him to UT) had decades of championship experience combined, whereas Applewhite's consists of a lot of promoted graduate assistants and first-timers.

Hoping for a 9-10 win regular season, but honestly wouldn't be surprised with it being 7-8. Very inexperienced bunch and may see meltdowns and last second disappointments similar to the Charlie Strong Longhorns last season.

Yes. I can't find it, but I remember seeing a graphic in 2015 when Herman was hired after he finalized his staff.

Something like 16 total conference, national, and pro championships between them.

Mhm. Both he and UH kept mentioning it when he first got hired in Houston. I think they had some graphics mentioning that also.

After the hire I read Appelwhite saying that Hermann had the head coach, OC and QB coach discussing both the offense game plan and specific play calling all thu the game. Made it sound like it was always a group effort and not one single person handling play calling. Major went on to say he wants to keep that system.

Good to hear Coach B give some props to UH and the facilities at the end (18:15 mark).

Wasn't Applewhite the QB coach also? Meaning it was just he and Herman discussing play calling? :D

Only one Thursday game, thank goodness. Sucks for not getting much TV exposure this year though.

The Texas Tech game should be tons of fun. Hoping we can squeeze 9 wins out of this schedule, but no idea what to expect with this coaching staff.

If they hit the ground running, they can win 10-11 games.

There are certainly some tough games, but there are no guaranteed loses on the schedule.
