In a way, however, Morey might soon offer an indication that the departures of Hinkie, Rosas and Karnisovas indicate the success of his department in his tenure. When Hinkie became the 76ers general manager in May, Morey did consider options outside the organization to the fill the position, but quickly decided to promote from within.

Even with the changes since, he still plans to fill the openings with promotions and adjustments in responsibilities, moving up Basketball Operations Analysts Monte McNair and Eli Witus, Director of Player Personnel Gianlucca Pascucci and Personnel Scout Jim Paulus.

Known commodities

This has generally been Morey's preferred way to run the Rockets' basketball operations department. With a large staff of analysts, he has hoped to have people ready to move up when positions open, and then to add new hires to fill the vacancies opened by promotions, rather than departures.

"There's less risk involved because you know the quality of the person," Morey said. "Any time you go outside, you take on some risk there that they are not as good as you hope. Going outside for a hire is more important when you need to change the status quo or you have a new ownership group and you're starting over. But if you don't have that it is usually to change the status quo (because) you're not where you want to be and you need to shake things up.

"The folks (to be promoted) have all been doing tremendous work. It's all been behind the scenes because we had Sam, Gersson and Arturas. But they're all very good.

"Obviously, there are the usual feelings when key people leave. It definitely hurts where we are. They are very good people. It does cause issues. I'm happy for them. Gersson was here 10 years, Sam eight years, Arturas five years. They deserve the chance."

Thanks. Great read. Glad Morey has the confidence to promote from within the existing staffs. A sure sign of a good leader is to knowing how to grow the individuals on his team.

Morey's list is probably ranked in order of his employees' skill level in chess + ping pong.

Just like OBP + SLG in OPS, we have an idea that chess acumen is more important than ping pong. We just don't how much more important.

In all seriousness though, the only skill that I fear we may find difficult to replace is Karnisovas' connections when it came to international scouting. You can't just hire somebody who can evaluate talent well on tape. You gotta also have a veteran of the FIBA circuit, someone that all the other scouts will freely divulge information with, someone who can get the scoop on underexposed players before other teams do.
