HoopsAnalyst is running a piece where he selects the All-Time All Rookie teams for each franchise. He's currently doing teams in the South West division: All-Time All Rookie Teams (South West) He selected the following All-Rookie team for the Rockets: PG - Calvin Murphy SG - Steve Francis SF - Robert Horry PF - Ralph Sampson C - Hakeem Olajuwon I thought it was an interesting read.
"The Rockets have had the fortune of having the top pick four times and getting some serious players each time" i sense boston fans are crying reading this line
I would put Elvin Hayes above Ralph at PF....and Calvin is a SG always was, so I would put John Lucas at PG and Calvin at the 2 guard. DD
later on that article, it says tim duncan and david robinson is better than hakeem and ralph. anyone else disagree?
They're both obviously better than Ralph. And I think its close between Hakeem, Robinson, and Duncan (I have no problem saying Hakeem is the best of the three, though, so don't flame me!). I can't disagree with that.
The site also said this about T-Mac: Toronto's Forgotten Rookie: I think everybody might remember Tracy McGrady. But it's been seven years since he played a game with the Raptors. Lore remembers T-Mac as a total bench warmer who was harassed by his disapproving coach Darrell Walker and never left his apartment. Some of this might be true but McGrady actually showed quite a bit of promise as a rookie, putting up 7 ppg and 4.2 rpg in 18 mpg and a 17.4 PER and his numbers steadily went up from there. The bottom line was that McGrady's rookie year, however it is currently remembered, showed a lot of promise.
I hate when ppl talk bull*hit... Hakeem > Duncan,Robison ? Yes,and always will be. That would say and Duncan and Admiral.
I would have to go along with you DD. First thought I had was that Sampson was potential and Big 'E' was real history. He is easily Top 50. Lucas had an abbreviated career, but he was the last true PG we had and that was long ago. Maybe Sam Cassell qualifies as a real PG.
i didn't read the article, is it robinson and duncan are better as rookies then hakeem and sampson were? if that's the case it's pretty close either way. that'd be a fun game, twin towers vs. each other as youngsters. i think the rockets in 85 are easily better than any robinson/spurs duncan team though. as a career whole then all 3 are a lot better than sampson, but hakeem is obviously superior to both robinson and duncan.
That is a good point. His numbers were not amazing, but he hit some key shots. The question is, would the Rockets win that first title if Sam Cassell had not been drafted? It was a damn good team and might have won without Cassell. But they might have not. That would make him the most important Rocket Rookie in history, not only in the PG position.
