I didn’t realize he was still only 25. If he can get his confidence back and stay healthy(big if) he still can get back to all pro form.

I thought he was closer to 30 and this was just a big name good player deal but I was gladly wrong. At 25 he can still ball out for another 3-4 years at pro bowl level.

If watt can even just stay healthy and be as good as he last season when he had no sacks through 4 games or whatever honey badger and Colvin are going to get 5 picks each.

I have no doubt clowney and merciless are going to have there best seasons yet there in there prime.

If JJ is just 75% of what he was the defense might not even give up more than 14 points a game.

Houston sports is just loaded right now.

We got altuve signing that big deal and winning mvp and a World Series.

Harden locked up for another decade lol and about to win mvp and bring us to the promise land.

Now we got a stacked defense and this little kid Watson who everyone player in the nfl loves who’s about to set houston on fire win mvp next season and lead us to Atlanta.

Watson is about to pick up right were he left off. Kid is going to be throwing 3-4 tds every game with all this talent around him at WR, TE, and RB assuming Forman is back healthy.

I can’t wait for football man I really like this team and I really like Watson he’s just a winner and he’s crazy talented with his ARM not legs those are a bonus.

Clutch city has suffered enough after Hakeem retired. The city has a real chance to win a championship in all 3 major sports and have the best player in all three major sports. What other city has ever been able to say that?

Ppl hate on houston but we’re seeing the benefits of being in a huge market we just don’t get the publicity of New York, LA and Boston but that’s okay because we got that long oil and casino money down here.

HB was coming back from an injury last year. I have to believe another year of rehab and he'll play closer to his 2015 self. He's only 25, I think in our defense he could bounce back in a big, big way.

I like Hal as a 3rd safety and wouldn't mind having Eddie Pleasant back as a 4th S/Hybrid LB. Let's not forget last year rookie CB (Treston Decoud), he could take a leap this year.

I lean more towards letting him go. If he were going to be a safety, they should have moved him by now.

    FS: Hal
    SS: Mathieu
    CB: Joseph
    CB: Jackson
    Nickel: Colvin

If I were Gaine, I'd drop Kareem and sign Bashaud Breeland when he can pass a physical.

Same from the 'insiders'/writers. Not the same player, can't/doesn't move as fast/run as well. ... So I'm not as high on him or excited as others but it can still potentially be a good signing.

    DB Tyrann Mathieu, Texans
    Grade: B-

The Texans needed to upgrade their secondary this offseason. Problem solved. After re-signing Johnathan Joseph and adding Aaron Colvin from Jacksonville, the Texans finished out their spending spree by adding Mathieu after he became a salary-cap casualty in Arizona. Mathieu's one-year deal comes in at $7 million, which is down toward the bottom of the top 10 on a one-year salary for free safeties.

At his peak in 2015, Mathieu was a ball-hawking force of nature, capable of shifting between free safety and serving as a slot cornerback from snap to snap. The former LSU star picked off five passes, made 11 tackles for loss and knocked away 17 passes in 14 games before suffering his second torn ACL in three years. Since then, Mathieu has suited up far more frequently like a pure free safety, and the production hasn't been there. Over 26 games during 2016-17, the Honey Badger recorded just two interceptions, nine tackles for loss and eight pass breakups.

Interceptions can be totally random from year to year, and I think there's plenty of upside in targeting a guy with Mathieu's football instincts, especially given that he's still just 25 years old. The Texans are already deep at corner with Colvin, Joseph, Kareem Jackson and Kevin Johnson, so Houston might very well just stick with Mathieu as a full-time safety and use him and Andre Hal as interchangeable players inside and outside the box.

The downside here for the Texans is that they didn't get any additional years on the end of the contract. If Mathieu recovers his form, the Texans will happily take his return to form, but Mathieu will be in line to pick up a big free-agent deal after the season. Houston might not have had the opportunity in negotiations, but this would be a better contract for the Texans if they had the option of keeping Mathieu around through 2019.

... Mathieu's promising career in Arizona was marred by injuries.

Mathieu, 25, finished three of his five seasons on injured reserve thanks to two major knee injuries -- a torn ACL and LCL in 2013 and a torn ACL in 2015. Mathieu's 2015 knee injury derailed the best season of his career. When he went down in Week 15 -- the game the Cardinals clinched their most recent NFC West title -- he was in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year. He was named a first-team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl that season.

His 2016 season was cut short by a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Last season was the first that Mathieu played in all 16 games as he continued to recover mentally and physically from the past injuries.

Mathieu, a former LSU standout and New Orleans native, will start right away at strong safety for Houston, alongside free safety Andre Hal. The Texans will hope that adding Mathieu and cornerback Aaron Colvin, along with the returns of J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus as part of the pass rush, will help the secondary in 2018.

Mathieu was suspended by LSU before the 2012 season for failing drug tests and then was arrested on drug-related charges that October before leaving school to begin preparing for the NFL draft. He missed the entire 2012 season, leading to him falling to the Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 draft.

In 66 career games, Mathieu has 303 tackles, 25 pass breakups, 22 passes defensed, 11 interceptions, 4 sacks and 4 forced fumbles.

    Tyrann Mathieu, S
The Texans signed safety Tyrann Mathieu, who played the past five years for the Arizona Cardinals. Here’s a closer look at the signing:

Grade: A. While the Texans made moves early in free agency, they hadn’t made a big splash, particularly considering how much money they had available to upgrade a roster that was plagued by injury in going 4-12 in 2017. Houston made that big move for a playmaker Friday night by signing Mathieu to a one-year, $7 million deal.

What it means: The Texans needed a strong safety to play along with Andre Hal next season, and they found that in Mathieu. The former LSU standout will start right away and should be a difference-maker if he can stay healthy. Mathieu has a nose for the ball and should help a Texans defense that tied for 21st last season with 11 interceptions.

What’s the risk: Mathieu -- a third-round pick of the Cardinals in 2013 -- has dealt with injuries throughout his NFL career and finished three of his five seasons on injured reserve; the safety tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee in 2013 and tore his right ACL in 2015. If Mathieu has success in 2018 while on a one-year deal, Houston will be quick to try to sign him long term; the Texans also have the flexibility of it being a short-term contract if it doesn’t work out.
