    NBA Insider...May 27

In a perfect world, here is how the NBA coaching carousel should look when it finally stops spinning:

Larry Brown: Clippers. It makes sense folks. He's one of the few coaches who has a great relationship with Donald Sterling. With Brown taking the reigns, Sterling might feel more comfortable about actually signing a guy or two. Brown's greatest achievement could be turning around a Clippers squad with all of the talent in the world, but no clue how to put it all together.

Jeff Van Gundy: Rockets. He'd be crazy not to take this job. With Steve Francis, Yao Ming and young players like Eddie Griffin and Bostjan Nachbar already in place, the team has nowhere to go but up. A little Van Gundy discipline is all they need to be a playoff contender.

Paul Silas: Cavs. The Cavs need a good coach, and Silas is the best coach on the board. Players love him, because he's nurturing. But he's also strict enough to keep them in line. He'll have to be patient with this squad, but there could be some serious rewards.

Maurice Cheeks: Sixers. He'd bolt the Portland madhouse in a second to get a chance to coach back home.

Eddie Jordan: Raptors. Jordan knows a thing or two about coaching great point guards. If the Raptors take T. J. Ford as expected, they should be ready to roll right back into the playoffs.

Doug Collins: Blazers. I know it's a long shot, but I'd love to see it, wouldn't you? Doug crying his eyes out over the dead-head Blazers every night makes great copy. Don't go into the light Doug. Stay away from the light.

Tim Floyd: Hornets. I believe in second chances. The fact he didn't hang himself in Chicago is a plus. The Hornets are a good team. With the right coach, they'll stay that way.

Mike Dunleavy: Wizards. He has to resurface somewhere, doesn't he?

    Opinions.....

Jeff Van Gundy will be fine with me.

How come this guy didn't talk about the Hawks?

Eddie Jordan did not make Jason Kidd a superstar, but it appears that Kidd is making Jordan a NBA head coach.

Cheeks Says His Allegiance Is to the Blazers
    May 28, 4:15 PM (ET)

    By ANNE M. PETERSON
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks is among the possible candidates to replace Larry Brown in Philadelphia, but his allegiance right now is with Portland.

Larry Brown resigned Monday after six seasons with the 76ers. Cheeks, who played for the 76ers for 11 seasons and was part of their 1983 NBA championship team, has been mentioned as a candidate for the vacancy.

Cheeks also served as an assistant coach there for seven seasons, four of them under Brown. However, he has one year left on his contract with the Blazers, along with a team option, so the 76ers would need permission to approach Cheeks.

"As the head coach of the Blazers, my allegiance to and focus is on this organization and our fans - the city has been good to me," Cheeks said in a statement. "Right now my focus is on meeting with the coaches and scouts in preparation for the upcoming draft."

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported in its Wednesday editions that the 76ers were interested in Cheeks, citing two NBA sources. The team would not comment on the search.

Cheeks has been Portland's head coach for the last two seasons, accumulating a 99-65 record while overseeing a troubled team that had spate of on- and off-court problems. Three players were cited this season for mar1juana possession, and another was arrested for alleged domestic violence.

Forward Rasheed Wallace also was suspended for seven games for threatening a referee on the Rose Garden's loading dock after a game.

The Blazers ended the season 50-32 but lost in seven games to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. In Cheeks' first season with the team, the Blazers were swept by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

But Cheeks garnered good feeling among the fans this season when he came to the rescue of a 13-year-old girl who was struggling with the words to the national anthem before one of the Blazers' playoff games. The magnanimous gesture earned Cheeks national attention, even an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, are in the midst of their search for a both new president and general manager to replace Bob Whitsitt, who stepped down earlier this month.

"Maurice Cheeks has a done a very good job as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers these past two seasons. We believe he is a big part of the future of this organization, and he has become a valued member of the community," Blazers vice chairman Bert Kolde said. "We want him to remain here in Portland for a long time."

What does Van Gundy bring to our offense?

And if Jordan knows a thing or two about teaching great PGs, then why don't we want him to tutor Francis?

    Heaven knows he needs it.
