So here it is five o'clock in the morning and I am sick as a dog. My cats think it is wonderful because obviously I am only awake to pet and entertain them. I, on the other hand, am not as amused. Does anyone know any good homemade remedies to help with an annoying cough and sore throat? not to mention fever and a stuffy head? I'm taking perscriptions, but they don't seem to be doing anything. in fact, i am feeling worse. help me please! ------------------ Three to go.
Well, I've found the good old chicken soup to be unquestionably valuable, but that's probably not what you wanted to hear. Dr. Pepper and Altoids always makes me feel better . . . ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
Lots of vitamin C, and gargle listerine several times during the day. ------------------ It's my way or the highway!
Here is a good list: 3000 mg of Vitamin C each day 500 mg of Vitamin E each day Pick up some Ecinachea capsules and take 2 each day Get some Oddwalla juice (C Monster, Wellness with ehinachea) Get some orange juice Don't eat much - just soup, juice and maybe some crackers. Sleep A LOT!!! ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Sounds like allergies to me because I've been feeling much the same way for the past few days with the exception of the fever. Go for lots of Vitamin C and lots of water. Theraflu feels good on a sore throat. If you have trouble sleeping take a few Tylenol PM's or Nytol(sp?) and suck down a shot of Nyquil. You'll be feeling better in no time. ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
Gargling with warm salt water helps -- it helps kill off any bacteria, loosens up the mucous, and helps dry out your throat. My aunt, a nurse, is a big fan of theraflu -- mixed with a little Kalua. Also some kind of long acting nasal spray -- like Nostrilla -- can clear up the stuffy nose, which will help you feel better. ------------------ Stay Cool...
I know this sounds totally gross but it works SURE FIRE!!!!! Boil an onion in 4.5 cups of water and a tablespoon of salt. After you boil it for 15-20 minutes, remove the onion and stir in 1/4 cup of honey and boil for about 3 more minutes or until honey is dissolved. Pour about 1.5 cups into a glass and drink. Save the rest in case you need some later, which you usually don't. I know it sounds awful, and believe me it is, but it works! ------------------ Arkansas' Biggest Rocket Fan!
Listening to you guys, that girl's probably dead by now smelling like vinegar, onions, listerine, and mmm mmm, apple cider. Ali, you're actually taking medical advice from us? Go see a doctor, girl. BTW, studies recently have shown that taking too much Vitamin C (over 500mg a day) actually has a negative effect. One study from what I read said that it promoted hardening of the arteries. Lovely. ... yes, even though technically it's a water-soluble vitamin. ------------------ Yugo grills, Yugo mills, Check out the oil my Yugo spills... Apple Cider Vinegar is DEFINITELY a terrific thing. You can mix it with a little honey, but it still tastes like crap. It is so good for you, though. ------------------ And then, depression set in...

Warm tea and honey did it for me when I had mono. I remember wasting away for like two weeks with this horrible sore throat, gargling nasty salt water and haivng chicken noodle soup. All that stuff did was make me feel worse, ESPECIALLY the saltwater. Warm tea and honey was the only thing that made my throat feel better, if only I knew to try it in the beginning I might not have felt as bad as I did for 2 weeks. After my mono experience, I've gained a healthy dislike of doctors. ------------------ To resist is to piss in the wind, Anyone who does will end up smelling, Knowing this why do I defy, Cuz my inner voice is yelling.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I'm definitly not brave enough to try the vinegar, but the warm salt water seems to help. as does the honey and tea. since i'm still running a fever and i have three papers to write by next thursday and give a presentation tomorrow, i'm gonna go see a doctor in the morning. ------------------ Three to go.

For a sore throat, you must gargle with vinegar. It is the only sure-fire way to get rid of it. White vinegar is the best, the stronger the better. It will be horrible, and you might even puke, but it will definitely get rid of the sore throat. 100% guaranteed. Forget about orange juice. Instead, drink water with a few tablespoons of lemon juice mixed in. Lemon juice has much more vitamin C and you can drink more of the water-lemon juice mixture than you can orange juice. Plus, it's more refreshing. Echinecia (sp?) herbal tablets usually work, but they must be taken in the beginning stages of a cold to be effective. Don't forget to gargle with vinegar! ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
I have no sympathy for you being up at 5.00am. My daughters have me up at that time every day I don't know any home remedies other than drinking TONS of water - a Doctor friend of mine once told me that sore throughts are basically just dehydrated tissue. Drinking heaps of water will not only make you feel better, but stop the soreness from spreading. Tylenol usually works wonders for me. ------------------ ..as a man danced so the drums were beaten for him. Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
This will sound disgusting and bizarre...and it should...but the most fool-proof method I've found is to drink apple cider vinegar. It's up to you whether you want to mix it with water or not, but you drink it to the point where the taste becomes even more unbearable than usual(if you're stopped up, you won't taste it as well as you normally might, no matter how much it seems to the contrary). You repeat much later if it doesn't seem to have any effect. You shouldn't have to do it too many times, and I suggest no more than two or three times a day. It really should get better immediately, though. Another thing to try is 1000mgs of C every hour on the hour...and don't stop immediately after the symptoms go away. I've also heard that taking garlic(pill form, you can find it in odorless form) helps. Just some suggestions. These have all been suggested to me by people in my profession (acting) who really needed to get well quickly. ------------------ Gascon
