Hayes, Loughery to head soph, rookie teams NEW YORK -- Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes will join Kevin Loughery, Phil Chenier and Jack Marin as coaches in the 2001 Rookie Challenge on NBA All-Star Saturday. The Rookie Challenge will be played Feb. 10 at MCI Center in Washington D.C. Hayes, a member of the 1978 NBA champion Washington Bullets and a 12-time NBA All-Star, will be the head coach of the Sophomores, a team made up of the top rookies from the 1999 NBA Draft. Chenier, Hayes' teammate on the Washington's 1978 championship team, will be the assistant coach for the Sophomores. Loughery, an 11-year NBA veteran who coached for 20 seasons in the ABA and NBA, will coach the 2000 Rookies. Marin, a two-time NBA All-Star who led the helped lead Baltimore to the NBA Finals in 1971, will serve as Loughery's assistant. ------------------
