Is it common for teams to commit half of their salary cap to a single player?

No, not half. Harden is getting 35% by CBA limitations.

The highest max is 35% for players with 10+ years, or the very few who qualify for the Designated Player supermax with less than 10 yrs.

Even the 10 yr tenure for anyone, there are still few thought to be in their superstar/max prime then. 7-9yrs is 30% and <7 is 25%

That's a lot of money, but money well spent. This is a star driven league and Harden has twice finished in 2nd place in MVP voting in the last 3 years. You are not going to get much better than him signed via FA or via trade and we have already seen the tragedy that becomes of teams who can't get their stars to ink an extension. Besides, true Superstars and decent rookies are the best contracts on the market relative to production. You wish you had some of that money back to ink talent around him, but I mean if you got a guy who can nearly single handedly get you into the 2nd round in the West, you kind of have to give him whatever he wants...

It's not common to extend so early. And Morey did it with Harden again. It's a sign for long term commitment.
LeBron is not recruiting because he only has 1 season left on his contract and he's not committed to staying.
Harden extending right now is all about recruiting

honestly though ...NFL players are underpaid relative to the injury risk they take and the profitability and popularity of the sport. It really is crazy that the NBA and MLB pay their players more. I get that there are more players on an NFL roster, but only guys like Payton Manning take home $24 mil per. Virtually no one else in the NFL does; the top guys at other positions maybe take home $12 mil per.

Not saying it's pennies, but considering Tim Hardaway Jr. just signed a deal for $17 mil per ...it's insane.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Are you suggesting that the future projected cap will be around $80 mill?

Anybody that doesn't like this extension is grossly oblivious to how important elite talent is, and how hard it is to get them.

75% of the league is desperately trying to get a player of this talent. The 25% that do have one are bending over backwards to make sure they are able to keep them from leaving.

You got one that wants to stay, you make it happen.
