Definitely. That pick will be nice when the Grizzlies big men break down and all they're stuck with is Rudy Gay.

Cavs got a nice young player that the Grizz were high on too, in Selby.

Of corse he'd do it if it was expiring contracts. The grizzlies wouldn't have thrown in a pick if they were just giving away expirings

Looks like Gay/Z-Bo are there to stay... for now at least. In the future its still going to be very hard for this team to add talent. Especially when they are having to constantly give up future picks, and young talent to move salary for lesser talent.

This is a big blow to their depth, and a medium blow to their ability to add talent through the draft. I personally would have sought out a Gay trade first, but at least this keeps their bosses happy in the short term to get under the lux tax.

But it keeps him from trading Gay or Randolph. The casual fan doesn't care about a 2015 draft pick. But they would have revolted had a good team like the Grizzlies traded one of their top players strictly for monetary reasons.

Speights might be slightly overpaid, but he's serviceable and won't impact the Cavs salary situation next year too much (they'll still have more than max cap room).
Selby probably will amount to nothing, but he's still a young prospect that looked really good in the summer league and once was a top-5 high school recruit. Ellington... well you only gotta pay him $1M for the rest of the year and then he's gone.

This is a good deal for the Cavs.

Rockets couldn't have done one-for-three player deal and probably didn't want Speights' $4M on the books for next year. Also didn't have a minimum salary player who can play PF/C spot minutes like Leuer can, if needed.

Rockets still could do a similar deal at the deadline. The Bulls are to be the obvious trade partner. Golden State probably will try to get under the tax as well.

I'm not sure if Grizzlies done with trading. Before Ellington included to deal it seemed like they want to avoid luxury tax but with Ellington gone they have no bench players for their backcourt besides Bayless.

I can see a Gay for Gordon, Henderson, Diop trade. Diop and Henderson's contracts expires this summer while Gordon's contract expires next summer. They can be competitive and avoid paying luxury tax on that way.

Yep. As mentioned earlier in this thread, this trade vaults Houston to the head of the "have cap room, will facilitate deals for assets" class.

Yes, Phoenix has comparable cap room (a little less than Houston), but Sarver is not too keen of taking on salary for draft picks; whereas Les Alexander has a proven track record of being willing to spend money WHEN NECESSARY if it will help the long-term picture for the Rockets.

Theoretically, Cleveland can still pull off a "Rip-and-a-pick-for-cheap-Cavs-player" trade using their remaining cap room; but I'm hoping the Bulls' desire not to deal Rip within the conference would carry even a little weight. However, this (competition from Cleveland and Phoenix as a "dumping ground") is why I am pessimistic about getting a first round pick out of Chicago. I think it may be more along the lines of two second rounders.

Pretty much indicates that ZBo and Gay won't be traded now.

Vujacic wont be able to sign with Grizz because he has no opt out clause in his contract back in here, Turkey with his team Efes. The rumuor was denied by Turkish insiders immediatly.

Without 1st round picks in 2013/15, and a limited bench, it's hard to see the Grizzlies improving.

Really thought they would've been better off waiting closer to the trade deadline to trade Gay or Randolph, and get depth in return. They have good enough players in the starting unit to withstand the loss of a Gay or Randolph, but really lack depth. They'll be like Portland ... running on fumes after exhausting their starting 5 after 40 games, except of course better.

As for the Cavs. Great trade.

I guess this is a situation where having Royce White's 15th roster spot tied up really sucks. Rockets could have traded Douglas, Anderson and the 15th guy on the roster to Memphis to get that pick. Cheap, and saves the Grizzlies from trying to sign guys out of Europe, DLeague or YMCA.

I think you can find a taker for Speights after the season as an expiring contract.

Sasha no longer with Masha. No eye candy in the stands. So what other purpose does he serve then?

A couple notes on the numbers here:

    1. An important aspect of this deal is that Speights has a $4.5M player option for 2013-14, which he is most likely going to pick up. This is why HOU is likely not doing this deal with or without an open roster spot.

HOU is due to have $15-17M+ or so in cap room this upcoming summer and is unlikely to want to lower it to $10.5-$12.5M just for a 2015 draft pick. Could mean the difference between getting a max level player in free agency and just missing out. The Cavs have no such concern since their salary for 2013-14 is much lower.

    2. The Grizz are saving a bundle here: likely more than $8M this season and more the $10M next year when you consider both salary and tax consequences.
