This explains why the Raptors are dangerously good.

Yeah... Wonder which part of these analytics told them trading for Rudy would be a good idea.

The aggressive help d they're talking about seems like what we're doing. The problem was that with shooters like Curry or when someone has the hot hand, the coach has to adjust accordingly.

while both you guys need to chill on the rudy hate, i'll answer this like an adult. that isn't the point of their analytics, it isn't evaluating players, its more about improving what they have.

That's a neat tool they developed. I wonder why they were willing to have it featured like that on a popular blog? It's seems like something they should keep under wraps.

Maybe they figure this would encourage other teams to sing up for SportsVU in their arenas and that would ultimately be beneficial because they would have more data to analyze.

Math is math, it's never wrong. The problem is how math(stats) is collected and used. The stats geeks want Paul Milsap to shoot more 3's simply because he is a 30% 3-point shooter according to stats. But, does stats show how he shoots? Can he shoot 30% with hands in his face or can he only do that when left open? If he only make 30% open shots, then you have to screen for him. Will any coach in his right mind be willing to run plays for Paul Milsap to shoot 3-pointers? Raptors front office must be idiots if they really believe that crap:eek:

The same thing goes with the "player capability" factor that's supposed can be entered to this magical analytical tool. Sure, "Chris Paul is a more deadly mid range shooter than Rondo". But, ever heard of "hot hands" or "going cold"? Do you really want to leave Rondo open when he's made 4 shots in a row? Oh yeah, the coaches and players just have to take their computers to the game;)

Search "hot hand fallacy". A lot of these analysts would contend that "hot hand" within a game is often just randomness.

Houston Rockets have a more advanced version of this software. When the Rockets ran theirs on the data from the most recent games, it showed a ghost No. 54 being in correct spots whenever No. 20 or No. 41 are on the court.

Well I think "streakyness" is a fact, it's not random. Athletes are humans. Sometimes they get into a groove, have the confidence, "feeling it". Sometimes they don't.

Maybe they should invest in some analytics that evaluates players, then.

I generally agree with you. There is a mental side of shooting. Rhythm and confidence are very important. Those things contribute to the "hot hand" phenomenon. I guess it depends on individual players. Some people are affected more by the mental, and some guys are more like machine which is complete randomness.
