Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the “full extent” of so-called Russian meddling activity that took place on the platform during all of 2016 was $4,700 spent on some digital advertisements.

Google CEO Exposes Shocking "Full Extent" Of Russian Meddling In 2016

"Does Google now know the full extent to which its online platforms were exploited by Russian actors in the election two years ago?" Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, asked the search engine's chief executive during Tuesday's hearing.

"We have - we undertook a very thorough investigation, and, in 2016, we now know that there were two main ad accounts linked to Russia which advertised on Google for about $4,700 in advertising," Pichai responded.

"A total of $4,700?" Nadler asked to confirm.

"That's right," the Google executive replied.

$4,700. And this is what the Democrats want to blame Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss to Donald Trump on?

    What a sham.

YouTube is owned by Google and it is included in this analysis. Watch any online videos lately? Or have you performed a Google search recently?

You don't have to spend money to rank highly in Google or appear in the featured "rich snippet" news and image results.

Certainly. Of course it should be observed that I never mentioned Facebook before right now, nor did I suggest that they were owned by Google.

Twitter on Thursday became the latest social media giant to draw the ire of Americans, including some. lawmakers, over reports that it sold nearly $300,000 worth of ads to a Russian agency tied to the Kremlin during the 2016 election cycle.

Facebook says accounts from Russia spent $100,000 on ads during the 2016 election

It’s a shame how cheap and easier it is to spread misinformation.

Conservative NRA wasn’t so cheap when it let Russia in...

This. Little, long-tail companies like my wife's stake the entirety of their marketing strategy on how cheap and easy it is to get the word out online. Makes sense for the Russians to spend a little bit of money on paid advertising to amplify their message, but all they really need to do is make content and have troll-farm and rube users disseminate it -- which is free. Uploading Youtube videos is free. Facebook pages are free. Tweets are free. Posts on the clutchfans bbs are free. Why anyone thinks advertising spend is a good proxy for activity is beyond me.

Because that's how it has been measured for years now for traditional media and people just assume it translate to more modern media? Or, because, it's super exciting to see certain $$.

A good measurement is how many users it reaches, how often it's viewed, and how much it get propagated. I'm sure some smart people out there are doing this study to figure out the best way to ... I would wager, hot button and controversial issues that are emotional in nature gets a good return on investment.
