Not really familiar with much country since I kind of always associated what I heard on the radio as pop country which doesn't do much for me. Had a former co-worker who worked at the Gruene Hall in New Braunfels and she introduced me to Ryan Bingham. Big fan of the guy and heard he's a local Texan. I'm sure there's much more good country I haven't been exposed to and would appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hayes Carll, from The Woodlands, is a good one to look at.

"She left me for Jesus" is my favorite song of his.

I also like John Moreland, and John Fullbright, although I don't think either are from Texas.

The Country I really hate is when the dude gets up there, affects a super thick redneck persona, tries to sound all masculine and tough, and sings songs about how country he is. I hate that crap.

This is the stuff that I like. Probably very much "niche" country. Sort of "country folk", 70's/outlaw country, bluegrass, and the really old stuff.

I spoilered because there are a **** ton of YouTube videos behind the tag. I didn't want to spam the thread.

The first three are from a documentary called "Heartworn Highways". Highly recomended +++. 70's country is the best country. Rodney Crowell grew up on Telephone Rd. Steve Earle spent time in San Antonio, and Van Zandt is from the Dallas area.

Little baby Steve Earle. It was 10 years after this before he had a real album.

The dude from Son Volt was in a band with the dude from Wilco called "Uncle Tupelo" that kicked ass. The total sum of my alt country cred is that I managed to walk in on one of their shows for about 10 minutes, back in the day. Here they are playing a song by the Carter Family, which as old school as it gets (the original version right after). So old school, that it was called "Hillbilly Music" back then, not Country Music.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JklKbR832og" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Love Old Crow Medicine Show. They're kind of a 30's type string band style of country. Defanitely at the fringe of most people's default image of country.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Y1D2UH1t6Eo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Sort of the stuff that turned into bluegrass, which I love.

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CwvyNUemJdM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Austin Lounge Lizards make me smile:

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q75qJ3vCmBw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I love the "country-ish" stuff that Ryan Adams has done:

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-J4GPnmYy_0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HN-wHU2f_jg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

He was also in Whiskeytown which was awesome:

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zjtUJTwbjWs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Basically anything that gets on Austin City Limits, I love. They do a lot more rock than they used to but I've got it set to record on my DVR.

Willie Nelson is kind of a cliche at this point but he was on in the 1970's.

Waylon and Willie is another great one:

    Merle Haggard:

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zLOFBlij-0c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I also really like the old, old stuff:

Lyle Lovett, Adam Carroll, Darden Smith, Willis Alan Ramsey, Townes Van Zandt, Shake Russell. Some of those are on the folkier side, but all are excellent.

Already mentioned, Robert Earl Keen Jr. and Hayes Carll are great as well.

You can't judge any music by what you hear on the mainstream radio stations - if you do, you'd always be disappointed. There is good country out there, its just not a fixture on the pop-country stations that rule the airways.

However, you can't go wrong with old country or even some Western Swing. I think Ottoman above hit a lot of the good stuff ^^^

You can go way back. Bob Wills is great.

There are a ton of others already mentioned here. Old 97s are good, Wayne Hancock, Robert Earl keen, The Gourds were good. Somebody already mentioned Sun Volt. I also like some Sturgill Simpson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Junior Brown (probably one of the greatest guitarists in any genre in the past 20 years).

There's also Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys, Hank Williams III has some good ones.

    Dale Watson is always good.

Two Hoots and a Holler or whatever Rick Broussard is doing is always a safe bet as well.

If you're looking for current artists, Sturgill Simpson and Jamey Johnson.

If you're looking for old artists you have a lot more choices. Personal favorite is Gram Parsons (and his first band The Flying Burrito Brothers). They were considered one of the biggest influences in "country rock.". But all the old standards are great as well. Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny cash, etc.

The last truly great country record to come out was Garth Brooks, his first self-titled album.

I truly loath most texas country artist who try to sound like JJW or WJ, etc. While not exactly country, take a listen to Alison Krauss's Two Highways or Too Late to Cry, which blows away anything in the last 30 years of country music.

The best texas album is obviously Willis Alan Ramsey's self titled album on the Shelter label.

I also don't mind some of the alt country stuff like Tift Merritt, Maria Mckee, kelly willis, etc.
