They're not, but they should be. The have a large media market, a strong local economy with many high-income professionals and many successful companies, the Pacific Ocean, one of the most beautiful cities in the country, a pleasant climate, and plenty of nightlife. Franchise players should be clamoring to come to the Warriors. The only thing they don't have is a competent front office. But New York managed to be a destination despite their incompetence. So, why not Golden State?
Because for all the qualities you listed in San Francisco, New York and LA have the same qualities but better.
If the Warriors ever had capspace, they would be. They blew it on Biedrins and Lee. Winning doesn't hurt either.
One, there are only so many roster spots in NY and LA. But players still see places like Chicago and Dallas (!?) more attractive than GSW when NY and LA aren't possible for them. Two, it's just not true that NY and LA are better at those things. Weather in NY sucks. LA is ugly. Nightlife is probably a wash. Their only common advantage is having even bigger markets, though the Bay Area is plenty big. Third, I had ulterior motives for bringing it up. Maybe the common wisdom that the superstars just want to go to glamor cities is an oversimplification of their motives. We've seen that sleepy towns can serve as a disincentive for stars picking their destinations, but there certainly seems to be more to the calculus than just wanting to go to NY because it's a big stage in a fun city. Miami used to be a pariah franchise. Houston used to attract marquee free agents. Dallas of all places is getting short-listed now. San Francisco should have draw but it doesn't. I think saying we can't compete for premier talent because they all want to go to glamor cities is wrong-headed. The city is a factor, but only one of many.
They need to rename themselves the Bay Area Warriors. I think that would give them a more positive connotation.
The had aweomse teams during the 90s. Their mid 90s team's core was Tim Hardaway, Sprewell, Chris Mullens and Joe Smith. Thats one hell of a team. But I guess others had better.
The Joe Smith Smith squad were mediocre at best, bro. I change my mind. They were awful. But how about that 1 year with Chris Webber?
