So I have seen this floated around the BBS here, and it appears to be catching steam on the national media outlets. What say you Astros fan? Do you want Gerrit Cole for prospects like Martes and Paulino? http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2017/5/21/15672400/mlb-trade-rumors-astros-gerrit-cole-pirates
I don't get it.. is he worth what? He's worth acquiring. We've heard zero rumors on cost, and you didn't propose anything here.. so I can't respond
Yep. But that is just lazy "journalism". He just highlighted the 2 pitchers the Astros have in the top 50 prospects. Didn't mention Tucker or 3 other players in positions 51-100.
I don't see how we can get Cole without giving up Tucker. Or even Tucker and Martes. If Tucker isn't in the trade then a big fat yes, otherwise I'd have to see the proposal.
If Tucker isn't part of the deal then to me it's a no-brainer that Cole is worth acquiring; he's a ToR SP with additional years of control remaining. If Tucker is part of the deal (which I assume is a requirement from Pittsburgh), then it depends on which other prospects are involved. If it were just Tucker and 1 other of the top tier (Martes, Musgrove, Fisher, Paulino, F Perez, Whitley) I think I could live with that. Anymore than that and it becomes a pretty questionable trade.
If it's Martes/Paulino/Reed/Fisher then yes. It it's Tucker/Paulino/Martes then I want Cole and Watson.
I already think people vastly overrate Watson. But even if you think he's the same player he was 2 years ago pre-Melancon trade, to say Watson is worth the upgrade from Reed/Fisher to Tucker?? No way. Certainly not on a team with a very good bullpen already. Watson would slot in as the best lefty and the ~4th best RP in the pen, probably tied with Harris. Trade lesser prospects for a guy who's just as good vs. lefties for 1 out or in the 6th/7th.
If writers are going to prey on teams that on paper might/could consider a rebuild, and therefore possibly dump top talent, teams like San Diego (13 gms out) or Miami (11 gms out) make more sense than the 5.5 gms out Pirates.
Maybe Keuchel, McCullers and McHugh/Morton is good enough... it would be great to add another frontline starter though... Keuchel, Cole, McCullers, McHugh/Morton would be strong.
Apparently Hand is getting a ton of interest. I'd definitely check in...the rumors are making it seem like the price will be higher than you might expect.
He would be the one I would focus on. I might bring up Fisher first and see what he can do out there for 6 weeks, then move on to ozuna if Fisher is not getting it done.
