Thought this was interesting... and mentioned Yao.

those who read me, know i’m a statistically-minded fellow … that being said, i decided to let the numbers tell you who-should-win-what-awards for the 2008-09 nba season … for the positional awards slots, i remained somewhat true to the categories. but i also allowed myself to be flexible with the categorization, so that the most deserving players numbers-wise still got their due.

to make these judgment calls, i used what I consider to be the most reliable statistics out there (john hollinger’s player efficiency ratings/value added system and the defensive win shares system created by dean oliver & justin kubatko).

no method is perfect. but when dealing with numbers only–and leaving opinions out of the equation–these stats were the best for the job, in my assessment.

one more thing (as you probably already know): in my mind, the season is only 75 percent over … we’ve got 2 1/2 more months of basketball left, with the playoffs 10 days away. and remember, i won’t be turning my official ballot in until after the 2009 nba playoffs are over!!! (not that i’ll ever get an official ballot with this mindset, lol) … and that nba awards ballot, mind you, will have the human element of opinion factored into the equation, along with the most important criteria of postseason success.

Darryl Howerton of FresnoBeach.com did ... something ... with numbers and came up with these names for the NBA's first and second team's all-defense: "First team: Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Chris Paul. Second team: Yao Ming, Tim Duncan, Rashard Lewis, Gerald Wallace, Dwyane Wade." Several names there may surprise. Chris Paul has been the subject of much advanced stats debate, because last year adjusted plus/minus numbers suggested the Hornets played better D when he was on the bench. Rashard Lewis never used to be thought of as a defender at all. He sure takes it seriously now, but has he risen to this level? Yao Ming does anchor one of the NBA's best defenses, but would most fans name him the Rockets best defender above Chuck Hayes, Ron Artest and Shane Battier? And what about Wade? He gets steals and blocks like crazy, but doesn't he also let a lot of people drive by him?

Yao deserves Second All-NBA (above Gasol) as well as Second Defense, although I always thought the All-NBA teams were one per each position?

Lebron as runner-up DPOY is a complete joke. Dwight Howard is about as overrated a defender as I've seen in a while also but considering how weak the Center position is these days I guess it's hard to argue.
