That Yao is such a great guy... http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/5840720?FSO1&ATT=HMA NBA star swears off shark's fin soup BEIJING (AP) - NBA star Yao Ming pledged to give up eating shark's fin soup, a Chinese delicacy, as he joined a campaign to promote wildlife protection. "Endangered species are our friends," Yao said on Wednesday at a news conference organized by the San Francisco-based conservation group WildAid. The group said China is the world's biggest importer of shark's fins, which conservationists say are cut from sharks that are thrown back into the ocean to die. WildAid put the worldwide trade in shark's fins at 10,000 tons a year. "As the human population increases, many wildlife species are decreasing, and the primary reason is that humans fail to treat animals as friends," said Yao, who played for the Shanghai Sharks basketball team before moving to the Houston Rockets. A conservation advertising campaign featuring Yao includes other wildlife as well as sharks. A television commercial shown at Yao's news conference featured him jumping up from a basketball court to block a bullet fired at an elephant.
I gotta see that commercial!! A television commercial shown at Yao's news conference featured him jumping up from a basketball court to block a bullet fired at an elephant.
yao is such a damn hippy. i bet he hugs bamboo shoots. I kinda like sharkfin soup. But I don't like the ethics of it. I mean, you can't use the shark for anything else?
i've seen Discover Channel specials on that stuff. it's pretty heartbreaking. they just catch, saw off the fins, and throw the sharks right back into the water alive.
Use the skin for a suit. The jaw/teeth for souveniers. Donate the rest to a university/museum for research (Shark Body Worlds, they used a horse!). Get creative!
Fish & chips. In Australia, shark is sold under the name flake. It's used by a lot of fish and chipperies mostly because it's cheap.
http://www.buyhard.fsnet.co.uk/animalcruelty.htm Lots of puppies and kittens are hoping Yao does more than swear off shark fin soup.
Anyone remember that episode of the Simpsons where they were showing a film clip of the food chain and it showed a shark jumping from the water eating a gorilla?
I uploaded the Yao's news conference, the television commercial about elephant is on the 40 secs mark. The quality is crappy though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_sLgkEUtmY
Iron Chefs and their respective competition and judges collectively gasp in horror upon hearing this news.
He didn't just swat the bullet, he just grabbed it in the midair. Matrix is in Yao's future, is he the one?
But... Shark fin soup are so yummy... I just love it. I don't like what they do with the sharks but it taste so good. Plus my family only makes it on special occassions because it is expensive. Anyways I applaud Yao to give up a Chinese delicacy just to help endangered animals.
