The Denver Nuggets have promoted assistant general manager Arturas Karnisovas to the role of general manager, a source confirmed to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Karnisovas reportedly was a finalist for the vacant GM position with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Tim Connelly, who had been the team's GM, will take on a new role of president of basketball operations for the Nuggets, the source confirmed to Windhorst.

Both Karnisovas and Connelly began their Nuggets careers in 2013.

The 46-year-old Karnisovas has been Denver's assistant GM since '13. This past season, he also served as the team's vice president of basketball operations.

Before joining the Nuggets' front office, he worked five seasons for the Rockets, including as their director of scouting.

Karnisovas played at Seton Hall, won Olympic bronze medals for Lithuania in 1992 and '96, and played several years internationally.

The Nuggets are coming off a 40-42 season, just missing the playoffs. They have a rising star in Nikola Jokic but also are expected to face free-agent decisions on Danilo Gallinari and Mason Plumlee.

The Denver Post and The Vertical earlier reported the front-office moves.

1st Lithuanian GM, very nicely done by Karnisovas, was always a an act of true gentlemen on and off the court, had a great carrier, sadly one of most injury riddled ones as well, hope Nuggets can start making playoffs. Interesting that Nuggets promoted him only when he was one of the 2 finalist for the Bucks.

i was wondering some time ago whatever happened to Karnisovas. He was one of my favorite players at one point. I didn't even know he was doing something in the NBA, I thought he might be retired on the beach somewhere in Spain or Italy.

    Good to hear.

Great news for the Rockets. Another reasonable GM for Morey to make deals with. Hopefully Hinkie gets a new job soon.

Definitely much better compared to what they had before, but that's just me, homer speaking, but i feel like Nuggets will shuffle quite few players around, given they still need to improve a lot and their drafting haven't been all that good.

Would be nuts if he were to get CP3 in his first year as GM.

Except Karnisovas hates Morey for his lies.
