GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Former NBA player Vernon Maxwell was being held Monday on a felony charge for failing to pay about $160,000 in child support.

State Attorney Bill Cervone said Monday that the $160,000 includes interest through last fall for the 14-year-old son Maxwell has with Myra Jenkins of Gainesville.

One $108,000 bond is cash only, which means he would have to pay the entire amount to be freed, not the usual 10 percent paid to a bail bondsman.

Maxwell, 38, of Alpharetta, Ga., was being held on several bonds totaling $126,612, Alachua County Jail officials said. One $108,000 bond is cash only, which means he would have to pay the entire amount to be freed, not the usual 10 percent paid to a bail bondsman, Cervone said.

"He has shown a history of failure to meet his responsibilities in the support of his children," Lt. Jim Troiano of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office said.

There was no record available on who was representing Maxwell, Cervone said. At his initial court appearance Saturday, Maxwell said he planned to hire a private attorney.

Maxwell, a former University of Florida star, was extradited from Cobb County, Ga., on Friday, where he had been arrested on unrelated charges, police said. Police in Georgia were set to release Maxwell after he posted bond, but they contacted authorities in Alachua County after discovering he was wanted in Florida.

Maxwell spent 13 seasons in the NBA, helping the Houston Rockets win titles in 1994 and 1995.

He has had other legal problems. In 1997, a warrant was issued for his arrest for nonsupport.

He got a 90-day jail sentence for mar1juana possession in 1995 in Houston. He also has been convicted on various counts of battery and assault, and was fined numerous times by the NBA for fighting with other players and fans.
