Just seems like a silly thing to jump on him about, given that "white evangelical" has been used by every news organization from npr to fox. I also think you may be taking Carl a bit too seriously. But I really don't care.

From the National Association of Evangelicals:

Sorry Buck Cheetah, white people do not have a monopoly on evangelism.

I'd say it's more a statistical political and cultural demographic than it is a religious definition.

True, and it is sometimes hard to tell the difference these days, but it definitely has specific religious beliefs associated.

It isn't? What about black, brown, red, yellow etc? Of course these are all short hand nomenclature.

Of course, most "white" people are a light tan, but there are some people out there with an alabaster/porcelain skin color.

(And: if anyone says "yellow" or anything else is offensive, then why aren't they all offensive?)

Might be in the eye of the beholder, but not all Baptists are evangelicals, IMO.

To me, "evangelical" necessarily means "proselytizing." Many Baptists engage in proselytizing, but not all (or even most) do. And they don't come anywhere near the Jehovah's Witnesses in terms of being annoying.

I think he might have had a decent post in the Cougar BB thread. Oh, he was also up to date on Louisiana's roads and that state's drinking age. :D

It's a terribly abused term, imo. There's been a bit of a reversal now where churches that considered themselves evangelical in a theological sense are starting to avoid using that term if they don't fit the popular cultural understanding of what white evangelicals are supposed to be into. It's gotten too many political barnacles to be useful as a description of your theology anymore. So, yeah, there's a doctrinal association, but I think it's also not -- two churches can proclaim many of the central tenets (which I'd say include inerrancy of the Word, a personal conversion and relationship with God, focus on salvation, and the mission for every Christian to proselytize) but one feels comfortable calling itself evangelical and the other doesn't. Which honestly I think is why "white" got in the description in the first place -- because evangelical black churches are not like evangelical white ones, even where the doctrine is the same. What really sets this population apart is not the doctrine, it's the social mores of those churches.

You don't choose your skin color. You choose to be white, and more specifically you choose to be white evangelical.

Can't believe @justtxyank is allowing these kinds of threads and verbal assaults to continue. I wonder how the NBA feels about this.

In the past 20 years, a disturbing number of Southern Baptists with formal church roles have engaged in sexual misconduct, a new investigation by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News reveals. They were pastors. Deacons. Youth pastors. They left behind more than 700 victims. Read and hear the stories of those victims, and learn the depths of the crimes and misconduct of the church leaders they trusted.

It's not a comment about skin color if you change what counts as a skin color.
