The strikers are ineligible for unemployment in most states. Union dues are not a 2-way street. Dues flow to the unions, but no striker's benefits for the unemployed members.

If the owner is butthurt yet the model is profitable, it'll be bought by someone actually willing to pay the workers. That's the same for all the businesses who are laying off people or cutting wages because Obama won. The system allows competition to innovate.

Someone with a catastrophically damaged sense of humor. Very quick to the ignore list.

    I mean, just: not funny.

If you don't like Obama, you are a racist. No way you can't agree with his policies, you're just racist.

Not only that. They caused the other 13,000 employees of the company to lose their jobs.

Why didn't they just quit if the pay/benefits weren't good enough or the conditions were that bad and not drag the other emps and the company to go down with them?

Same reason anyone strikes: to get better wages or benefits. Or in their case, to lessen the cuts to their wages and benefits.

Well, that is true. In this case, however, it backfired. The company faced problem such as diminished sales and demand. When the union would not come to an agreement, the union obligations made it infeasible to continue operations. Now they get nothing. The sale of the brands will be paid to the bankruptcy estate. After earned wages are paid, the trust takes its ten percent and creditors/bond holders are paid, there will not be much left over to distribute to others.

the Hostess execs gave themselves 300% pay increases before they filed for bankruptcy earlier in the year, then made a PR stunt by slashing their salaries to $1 when it was too late...

    thanks Obama!

Certainly all true. When you fight to improve your life (or prevent it from getting worse in this case), you don't always win. That doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a fight worth having and you should just accept whatever scraps you're offered.

Given that the company's management failed miserably, what the company probably should have done is offer the unions a stake in the company in exchange for reduced compensation - sort of like GM did. That helps align the unions' interests with that of management.

Can someone who is able to use the "Search" feature here tell me how many threads BTE started during 2007/2008 parroting Wall Street companies laying off tens of thousands and going bankrupt as a result of 8 straight years of Republicans Bush and Greenspan destroying the economy? I'm guessing the answer is Blutarski's GPA.

The final offer Hostess made to its 12 unions offered the unions a 25% ownership interest in the company. 90% of the union membership rejected that offer.
